I love moss and I love frogs and I just discovered the cutest thing in existence: the Vietnamese moss frog 🤗

What we saw in Brazil is the continuing evolution of the new authoritarian movement. The similarities to January 6 were no coincidence.

The question becomes: what was the point? They stormed Brazil's capital complex on a Sunday when no one was there and no business was being conducted. There was clearly no endgame. Is it a statement that no matter where you are, there are enough useful idiots around that fascists can turn them into a weapon against the general public? Was it just to see if they could pull it off again after the fallout from J6? Steve Bannon could probably tell you.

No matter the real reason, it's a clear sign that democracy is more at risk now than at any point in most of our lives.

We have an opportunity here to deviate from Silicon Valley’s dogma of infinite growth and demonstrating a more sustainable and cooperative way of existing that limits the growth of individual instances in favour of nurturing a sustainable ecosystem.

"With RISC-V usage to this point being more around developer boards, IoT devices, and other cases where hibernation/suspend-to-disk isn't normally used, it hasn't been much of an issue. But as RISC-V presses more for consumer devices the hibernation/suspend-to-disk is obviously of more importance": RISC-V Hibernation Support / Suspend-To-Disk Nears The Linux Kernel - Phoronix https://www.phoronix.com/news/RISC-V-Hibernation-Linux

When you have 6 year olds shooting people, the only answer is gun control. A 6 year old is not a rational actor. You don't stop a 6 year old from shooting someone through increased punishment or more cops. You only stop it by preventing the gun from ever reaching that child's hands. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/06/us/newport-news-virginia-shooting/index.html

Space policy expert Cris van Eijk wrote a concise post for his blog about this in 2020, titled "Sorry, Elon: Mars is not a legal vacuum – and it’s not yours, either" https://voelkerrechtsblog.org/sorry-elon-mars-is-not-a-legal-vacuum-and-its-not-yours-either/

(h/t to Cris for pointing this out on Twitter)

I decided to make Fedfree official, with a link to it from libreboot.org:

https://libreboot.org/news/fedfree.html

Fedfree's goal goes far beyond self-hosting. One of my main agendas is to actually establish a manifesto of sorts, talking about not just libre software, but libre hardware aswell - the self-hosting tutorials tie into that because you can't have freedom unless you have the ability to share your ideas without restriction.

Fedfree's mission is to promote freedom of all kinds, related to technology.

Lula has given a televised address calling the attack in Brasilia “barbarism” and assuring that everyone involved will be "found and punished".

He also said that "The police didn’t do anything at all. They just let the protesters in."

He called the rioters "fanatic fascists".

There will be a new vaccine on the market, but not for humans. Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture conditionally approved the first vaccine for #honeybees. It fights against a bacterial infection called American #Foulbrood. The vaccine trials, were run by a biotech company called Dalan Animal Health.

It is a series of "knobs" set at various levels for each manifestation of #Autism.

Just your regular reminder that those who claim we need new technologies to address the climate crisis are *really* saying that the overconsumption of the richest is more important than the rest of life on earth.
We have the tech we need for decent lives for all. 😘😘😘

Anyway, before we went on this numerical detour we were talking about radiation.

As you can see from the calculations above, astrophysical black holes are far colder than their surroundings.

The Cosmic Microwave Background is an ambient bath of photons with a temperature of about 2.7 K.

Black holes have a temperature, so they can radiate. But since astrophysical black holes are colder than their surroundings, they are out of thermal equilibrium and therefore absorb more energy than they emit.

What does this mean for the entropy?

The area of the Schwarzschild horizon is 4π times its radius squared. And the Planck length is astonishingly small – about 1.6 x 10⁻³⁴ meters. So the entropy of a 20 solar mass black hole is about 4 x 10⁷⁹ k_B.

This is many orders of magnitude larger than a self-gravitating ball of hot gas with comparable mass.

Black holes are far and away the most entropic objects in the Universe. Most of the entropy in the Universe is in the form of black holes.

If you are in San Francisco, consider shopping at Rainbow Grocery. They were hit by flooding and could use the support.
