Another new record I believe...

The UK is generating 73.9% of it's electricity from wind power and is importing less than 1% from the EU.

We are still being charged for electricity based on the cost of gas.

Other EU countries have severed the link between energy production and the price of fossil fuels.

That's why EU members are paying a fraction of what we are, whilst facing the same problems.

There is no energy crisis, it's a robbery

Peaceful #morning to everyone! I came accross this picture this morning from #NASA. Some people look at the #stars and they feel small. I look at the stars and feel #magical. We came from them. Stars and gas produced walking, talking, thinking, and living creatures. If you had been there at the start of everything, when it was just gas, would you have thought it was possible? Everything comes from nothing. It's a reminder that you are a #miracle. You are the universe talking back to itself.

Today marks 3 months on #Mastodon. The most delightful aspect for me is our high community engagement.

On #Twitter I suspect my posts got buried. A journalist reached out last Fall to ask why I was shadow banned & I had to search what that meant.

This place isn’t set up as a race for RTs & likes & posts aren’t typically composed to spark outrage. It feels like an ongoing conversation & I’m even getting to know some interesting new folks.

At least, that’s been my experience. I like it here.

@zleap it was released in 1979. Today it could soon be a case of "GPT killed the internet star.."

Ironically broadcast radio is still alive, but increasingly automated and dependent on volunteers (so a lot of the "star" culture did get killed off - I was at my friends house last night (he is a presenter on a local radio station) and he showed me all the voicetracking and playout software, and how he uses that to juggle presenting a voicetracked show with working remote for a callcentre!

@zleap @SteveClough @godpod There's 4 series, but it's still on going. New series early this year, I think.

📣 As a result of the community survey, I have updated the #bot today.

A reminder that the Daily Mail is a toxic waste dump of journalism -- vile, vile people at an outlet you should never, ever cite as proof of anything. (I immediately unfollow any account that treats the Mail as legitimate journalism.) https://mastodon.social/@rvawonk@newsie.social/109765532849132897

This should surprise no one. Kudos to the anti-vaccine movement for their successful advocacy that will ensure a return of devastating preventable diseases.

RT @BogochIsaac
There is a whooping cough (pertussis) outbreak in Southern Alberta.

This outbreak "spans several communities with low childhood immunization rates."

This is a canary in the coal mine - none of this has to happen.

We are in deep shit.

To understand why so many Americans have such contempt for the pharmaceutical industry, read this NY Times explainer on how a company gamed the patent system to enrich executives and shareholders -- and rip off everyone else. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/28/business/humira-abbvie-monopoly.html

The thing is, what the company did is legal. So if you're looking for who made it possible for sleazy corporations to do this, look at Congress, too.

THINK before you throw that away…

Or even better, before you buy it.

To understand why the lake is drying up, scientists analyzed two decades of @nasa’s Terra satellite data.

They found that between 2001 and 2021, fewer days of snow cover and higher surface temperatures led to more evaporation over Lake Albert. https://go.nasa.gov/3kPwsIE

@zleap too much to explain here. And it depends on what they get a PhD in. But 4 years of research experience.
