Chinese astronomers have found evidence of a "dark" galaxy: 98% dark matter, 2% hydrogen, and almost no stars at all.
It showed up in their radio telescope, but when they looked for the light from its stars they saw...nothing.

Transphobia in the media

Look, I'm not saying anyone *should* throw a brick through the NYT's windows. It would obviously be morally wrong. But we should certainly be allowed to talk about it. Open debate is an important part of a free society!

Proposed bill would mean free period products at all Arizona schools tucsonsentinel.com/local/repor
Democratic legislators are working to bring free period products to Arizona public middle and high schools, but detractors say those products are already offered to students free of charge — if they go to the nurse’s office and ask for them, and the school has a nurse.

Fun fact: KITT from Knight Rider canonically had 1GB of memory. Back then that was considered to be impossibly huge, science-fiction level computing

One thing I've struggled with on Mastodon is finding people and communities who post things that I'm interested in that are outside of who I currently follow.

Can anyone hear point me at folks who talk about chronic pain, disability and autoimmune issues? If not, boost for reach?

A few days ago, my friend's kids were at the makerspace.

The older of the two, an 8 year old autistic boy, walked up to my 1958 Philco Predicta and said "Can we watch TV?"

"Sure" I told him.

"Can we watch Rock and Roll on the Old TV?"

So I queued up the most recent episode of Put on a Show and played it on the NETV live stream, which the predicta runs automatically when it's live.

He grabbed a rolly chair from the computer lab, and climbed in to it with his younger brother. The two of them sat and watched Hurly Burly and The New Clear Lawn Chairs and Crosstalk, and sang along.

Robin Curtis, Star Trek’s Vulcan officer Lt. Saavik, beamed into my dressing room after seeing @allegiancebway at @CharingCrossThr on Wed evening. It was a wonderful reunion with one of my favorite members of the Star Trek family!

The Kinks are having their tweets censored for being too kinky (allegedly).

This British band have operating since 1963, with lots of chart success.

People know the Kinks. They're a rock band, not an S&M dungeon.

Unless Elon Musk knows a secret that I don't 🧐

Nevertheless, it's absolutely true that Twitter's attempt to automate all community safety is a train wreck.

Two "web3" social media apps were announced: SendingNetwork and SendingMe -- backed with $12.5M in seed funding.

These cryptobros are trying so hard to hijack decentralized social media!

However, $12.5 million doesn't mean anyone's going to give a damn.

Especially when the core value of that app is for users to "monetize their projects using smart contract payments and trading protocols".

Yeah, not a pain that most people have with social media 🙄

Small steps, giant leaps. The research here is already providing insights into how small-scale processes in our universe — like the earliest stages of star formation — could then influence the evolution of giant galaxies.

Webb’s high-resolution infrared data fills in missing puzzle pieces, complementing the science from telescopes in other wavelengths. By aligning these data sets, the team will be able to accelerate new discoveries.

Tesla terminated dozens of workers at its Buffalo a day after workers there announced a unionization drive, the union told the NLRB.

The union said Tesla had illegally fired employees “in retaliation for union activity" and "to terrify everyone.”
