Astronomers have directly imaged a supermassive black hole emitting a powerful jet for the first time. The image of the black hole in M87 could help better understand this powerful and violent phenomenon. The Leidenfrost effect is the phenomenon whereby a liquid, in near contact with a mass significantly hotter than the liquid's boiling point, produces an insulating vapor layer which keeps the liquid from boiling rapidly.

A quick history lesson. From 1940-1980:
•Wealthiest paid 70-94% marginal tax
•0 of them went broke from taxation
•0 of them left USA
•All remained exceedingly wealthy
•Manufacturing boomed
•The middle class was 62% of US economy (It's now 40% post 'trickle down scamenomics)
•We had the strongest middle class growth in US History

Let's do that again. Stop protecting billionaires. Start taxing them.

@tchambers I'm with you. In January of this year I included NASA, and other organizations, in saying they should consider having a Mastodon instance.

If an organization thinks it is important to host their own email or websites, they should think about hosting their own social media accounts as well.

Temperatures in the world’s oceans have broken fresh records, testing new highs for more than a month in an “unprecedented” run that has led to scientists stating the Earth has reached “uncharted territory” in the climate crisis.

The rapid acceleration of ocean temperatures in the last month is an anomaly that scientists have yet to explain. Some scientists fear that the rapid warming could be a sign of the climate crisis progressing at a faster rate than predicted.

"Secret Shoppers" in Oklahoma pretended to be pregnant women. They called 34 hospitals in the state to ask about the hospitals' policies on pregnancy complications requiring abortions.

"I think one of the most frightening statements, which was at one of the hospitals, the person was trying to be reassuring and she said,

'Oh, well, you know, in the case of a medical emergency, we would try to use the woman's body as an incubator to just try to keep the pregnancy going as long as possible'"

In the US, we make women wait in the hospital parking lot until they are on the verge of death before turning their expiring bodies into incubators in the ER.

Microsoft's Edge browser appears to be sending all the URLs you visit to its Bing API website.

Reddit users first spotted the privacy issues with Edge last week, noticing that the latest version of Microsoft Edge sends a request to bingapis.com with the full URL of nearly every page you navigate to. Microsoft tells The Verge it's investigating ...

Google has just updated its 2FA Authenticator app and added a much-needed feature: the ability to sync secrets across devices.

TL;DR: Don't turn it on.

The new update allows users to sign in with their Google Account and sync 2FA secrets across their iOS and Android devices.

We analyzed the network traffic when the app syncs the secrets, and it turns out the traffic is not end-to-end encrypted. As shown in the screenshots, this means that Google can see the secrets, likely even while they’re stored on their servers. There is no option to add a passphrase to protect the secrets, to make them accessible only by the user.

Why is this bad?

Every 2FA QR code contains a secret, or a seed, that’s used to generate the one-time codes. If someone else knows the secret, they can generate the same one-time codes and defeat 2FA protections. So, if there’s ever a data breach or if someone obtains access ....
