Why is the government flying in the face of tech and security experts?
The Online Safety Bill reveals the government’s hand: their priority isn’t safety, it’s surveillance.

Stephen Bush (FT) on why apologising for #Slavery while necessary isn't sufficient to right history's wrongs:
'People & places that have been dealt a bad hand by history don’t need apologies or hand-wringing from those of us with the dumb luck to get a good one. Mostly, what they really need is a plan to redress the imbalance — and the money to make it happen'!
So whatever we think about 'rewriting history', what is really required is real action on global #inequality!
Amen to that!
Suggestion: Reach out to your local government, emergency service provider, and/or news org. Let them know that Twitter has ended public access to content and that Mastodon is a working alternative *today*. I did this on the weekend with my local emergency folks and this morning I got a reply back saying they had noticed the embedded Twitter feed on their webpage was broken.
They didn't realize Twitter had cut that service. Now, hopefully, they are considering their options including Mastodon.
With this current surge of new people on Mastodon, keep an eye out for a surge in hate and targeted harassment (especially the sneaky type).
Not seeing anything major on this server, but a scan of certain hashtags and the federated timeline is showing a rise in racism, and targeted harassment (mostly sealioning) towards Muslim, Arab, Black and other peoples.
Reporting works here, mostly (some of the mega instances struggle at bit with moderating). So don't stay silent
'In the field of cybersecurity, the Republic of Korea and the European Union envisage to enhance information sharing on cybersecurity threats and intend to expand information sharing on cybersecurity policy and explore ways to cooperate'.
Is that really all the EU and ROK could write on their cyber cooperation in the joint statement of their inaugural Digital Partnership Council meeting (https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/news/republic-korea-eu-joint-statement)? What is this, the noughties?
Though, yes, it's unfair for me to 'single out' the EU and Koreans for vagueness. When compared to AI and chips and even 'the IRBO', cyber feels tacked on in most diplomatic statements.
Also, good to see EU building ties with ROK and JPN, having set up Digital Partnership Councils with both Indo-Pacific countries.
(Most specific and decent language on cyber I've seen thus far is in Quad (Cybersecurity Partnership) material.)
Ukrainians under occupation face deportation, loss of property after Putin's new order
Putin signed an executive order in late April that set a deadline for applying for Russian citizenship in the occupied areas of Ukraine.
Those who refuse and elect to hold onto their Ukrainian passports face losing their property rights, prison sentences, and deportation from their homes.

The Early Universe Ran in Slow Motion
One of Einstein's predictions is that we should see time moving at different rates at different ages of the Universe. Researchers have confirmed this prediction out to half the age of the Universe using Type 1a supernovae as standard candles. Astronomers have gone much further back in time, observing quasars that sent out their light 12 billion years ago. Over this vast distance, time has slowed to a crawl, with every second experienced by those quasars taking five seconds from our perspective.

im sorry. you havent switched on that laptop since april 27th? as any arch user would know if they were keeping up with the mailing lists, you've had ample time to apply the workarounds that cause trouble when the new key distribution patch mechanism attempts to recompile the kernel with non-vegan debug symbols
What's new in the upcoming #Mastodon version:
- Alt indicators
- Threaded lines natively! No more hacks.
- Follow buttons instead of follow icons
- Local and Federated are now combined as "Live feeds", under it there are tabs Local, Remote and All
- Direct messages are now "Private mentions"
- Three dot menu is now a burger
- Context menus are more clear
- Emoji menu is now slightly smiling instead of lol emoji
- Banner notification bars have now border radius and are more clearly visible with bold text
- Lists can now be accessed directly without the frustrating side step
- Admin user interface is more logical
- When replying, compose form has animated focus to clearly state it's appearing there
These are the ones I spotted for now! Perhaps there's more.
Please note the screenshot has #MastodonBirdUI enabled, it's not the official UI.

To anyone thinking about joining BlueSky, especially artists: everything you post is used to train generative AI models.
BlueSky uses AI to label content for moderation, and to do that they use a company called https://thehive.ai. If you look through their privacy policy, you will see that they use all content sent to them to train models for all their services, which include generative AI for both text and images.
It’s a built in “feature” and cannot be turned off.
