“If we walked past a neighbor’s house and saw it on fire, we would run to assist those inside. But when we see the world in flames, we shrug and say, ‘Oh well. What can be done?’

“The answer is that quite a lot can be done, and we better get busy doing it—while there is still time.”

NATO may not have a 'position' on cluster bombs, but I do. they are inhuman, as are the assholes that make, sell, buy, and use them

To observe anthropologist David Graber's recent death, I decided to read his book _Bullshit_Jobs_. To my delight, it turned out to be a rather concise description of why I had not been able to hold on to almost any job I have ever had before now: Either they were entirely bullshit jobs, or they became bullshit jobs after a reorganization.

I work for myself because I cannot tolerate the bullshit. I could probably be making a lot more money taking on bullshit jobs from people or incorporating some bullshit makework into my work, but I would rather have the self-respect to decline that.

I do seek clients who can appreciate this, though: only real problems solved, only meaningful billed hours.

OK but what if instead of travelling all the way to London and having to stay the weekend to stay in a hotel for a 5k… what if I trained for the local 10k in April 2024? That would give me 8.5 months to train. Or is that crazy talk?

So... in the US we now have an "anti-library" party. It's remarkable how many ways republicans keep coming for libraries and librarians. From the stuff in Houston where they are turning libraries into "discipline centers" and firing librarians. To the books bans and empty shelves in Florida.

Libraries are powerful and important, and if this doesn't make that clear? I don't know what will.

Drinking alcohol is an expectation in many male-normed workplace cultures. Yet alcohol has greater neg health impacts on women. One pancreatitis patient asked her dr when she could drink again. "She said it wasn’t acceptable to not drink with clients."

"The biggest danger is not inaction. The real danger is when politicians and CEOs are making it look like real action is happening, when in fact almost nothing is being done — apart from clever accounting and creative PR." - Greta Thunberg at #COP25, 2019

There's no official maximum working temperature here in Britain either; but the employers are expected to manage the temperature. I suspect the real problem with the USA fast food places is the pace of work and lack of enforcement of what regulations exist (as unlike a steelworks they tend to hire younger, less skilled and non unionised staff)

"This 14th century door at Exeter Cathedral, UK, is thought to be the oldest existing cat flap.
A cat was paid a penny each week, to keep down the rats and mice in the north tower, and a cat flap was cut into the door below the astronomical clock to allow the cat to carry out its duties.
Records of payments were entered in the Cathedral archives from 1305 to 1467, the penny a week being enough to buy food to supplement a heavy diet of rodents."
