It’s so important to get involved in local direct action and mutual aid groups, and to build communities that provide for each other. We cannot wait for elected officials to save us, they never will. The Democrats, the SNP, Québec Solidaire, it doesn’t matter. Electoralism is not a viable strategy for dealing with problems that liberal democracy has caused.

Passionate about decarbonization? Knowledgeable about how to get there?

Join me at Columbia Business School to help get our Climate Knowledge Initiative off the ground!

The task: go sector by sector, technology by technology, to help business leaders, policymakers, and the rest of us to zero in on the investable, scalable low-carbon technologies, while unapologetically flagging where business & public interests diverge. one thing I love about fedi (there are many things) is there’s so much less performative nonsense to appease or cater to followers than I’ve experienced elsewhere

just a lot of cool creatures being their weird freaky awesome selves 🖤🖤🖤

@J12t Don't really know what your context is, but I'd call it more like:

Defederation and Self-Ownership is the entire point. If you just want to test and learn without committing then there are public servers, but then you still have someone else holding your data, and you gotta chose who that is. You should probably consider it temporary home, like a fediverse hobo living in a hobo hotel until you set you your proper homestead.

But this is why they don't let me do presentations.

I think my answer would be:

1. the increasing enshittification of the current internet causes individuals and communities to seek out still-less-enshittified alternatives, and preferably alternatives that are less like to do so in the future. ("Use mastodon: no ads!")

2. the growing unease with use of collected personal data for manipulation by the big platforms causes users to seek out places that don't do that. ("Use mastodon: no algorithms!)

3. some organizations are beginning ...

Just saw that #Etsy has had three articles about how they mistreat their sellers in as many days. As an independent #artist myself, I've been struggling to find purchase (and purchasers) on the platform, which is why I started building #magpiemarket - a #federated Etsy-alternative. These articles just go to show how much we need a new space that helps #artists rather than uses them. Please #boost this to help us spread the word.

Growing up Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher told us that capitalism went hand in hand with freedom and democracy.

Today we can see that capitalists can quite comfortably walk hand in hand with authoritarianism and fascism to maintain and consolidate their wealth and power.

Excerpts from a superb op-ed by Dr. Farhana Sultana (@farhanasultana)...

The climate crisis is a human-made catastrophe resulting from centuries of exploitation and disregard for the environment, driven by the relentless pursuit of capitalist profit and power. That makes it a crisis of governance and prioritization of how problems are presented, solutions are pursued and interventions are funded.

Climate change is also not a universal burden. Its impacts are unevenly distributed, with the most vulnerable communities bearing the brunt of its devastating effects. Meanwhile, the power to determine climate change responses and solutions has been concentrated in the hands of wealthy nations and corporations.

This is the essence of what is called climate coloniality. It refers to the various ways legacies of colonialism haunt the climate emergency — how colonial and imperial era’s exploitative and discriminatory ideologies and institutions not only shape who is disproportionately impacted by climate change globally but also who has the power to determine policies, solutions and financing.

Current climate governance and decision-making approaches are rooted in the same colonial mindsets that led us to this very crisis. They continue (and worsen) the same power dynamics, inequities and injustices. They are not just inadequate — they are part of the problem.

Decolonizing climate governance requires a radical shift in our approach to the climate emergency. It requires us to confront the colonial and capitalist legacies that enduringly shape our world. It necessitates challenging the power dynamics that perpetuate climate coloniality. It demands centering the voices, experiences and knowledge systems of diverse Black, Indigenous and people of color in climate solutions, while also learning from communities in the Global South.

Decolonization is not just about dismantling the structures of colonialism. It is also about healing from its wounds. It’s about acknowledging the violence and material outcomes of colonialism and capitalism and then creating pathways for decolonization toward climate justice.

@ChrisMayLA6 @annaf worse they accidentally prevent small to medium businesses helping as they are focused entirely on a few giant corporations. As they fund them, which is why I am against corporate funding of political parties.
They haven't realised that helping 100 small businesses recruit 10 employees has a greater economic effect locally than 1 corporation employing 1000 new staff. And 100 are less likely to all fail at once.
