It works fine. You don't see markdown rendered, because your client which finally displays the status to you on the receiving end strips it off and ignores it. I can see the markdown status both in FediLab app, as well as in the web app of my home Mastodon instance.

Isn't FediLab enough? It connects to friendica, but I never tried.

I’m using the default web client. That’s pretty sad if it is the fault of the default client.
Yes, by default Mastodon emulates Twitter: no rich text formatting, just plaintext. Some instances are heavily customised, like qoto.org where I have my vista. But that is an exception.
I have to admit when I've heard people say "if you run Pleroma [which I started with] it will be lighter to host, at the cost of functionality" but so far I am thinking Pleroma has more, not less, functionality compared to Mastodon. Neither of them have as much functionality as Friendica. Friendica, however, doesn't have (native) apps.
