so, we switch to battery electric vehicles, charged via already fragile power grids, powered by renewables known for their constant stable output. and the cars get remote kill switches too.

doesn't sound like a bad idea at all! at least if you want means to prevent rapid movement of your "citizens" :)

tinfoil

renewables aren't bad, but we really need more converting of electricity to hydrogen, methane or liquid fuels (existing processes!). charging batteries is bullshit.

tinfoil

much like cryptocoins there is a terrible signal/noise ratio with renewables. so many shortsighted inefficient wasteful ideas. both have the potential to be amazing, both are fucked by few big players in for the quick buck.

@bonifartius decentral mini hydro and solar thermal - okay. But steel and concrete production with panels? Never. Then there is the problem if reinvesting energy for maintenance. Oil and coal has practically none. Gas too very low. Available ebergy to society will plunge. No more wide range travel etc. and consumption will be down.

tinfoil

@CapitalB with "decentral mini" anything is good, because it depends on where you are.

of course fossil fuel has much energy, but i'm usually also arguing for less consumption in general. there used to be appliances which worked decades. there are so many things produced with planned obsolescence it's not even funny.

that alone would save a huge part of fossil resources, which are, imo, too valuable to be used for energy. maybe with the exception of the things you noted (concrete, etc.). we'll never have replicators, we need the substances found in fossils, with oil containing the most useful. energy can be "harvested" with many different methods.

i think that the current goal is to keep up consumption of bullshit and reduce other freedoms because individual freedom doesn't generate profits. netflix & chill.

tinfoil

@bonifartius netflix and chill indeed. I shiver, that I cant move beyond "county lines" anymore just bc somebody said so. We have trains here going through Europe but if the cars are fubar then trains cant pickup the slack.

tinfoil

@CapitalB trains are technically good but too centrally controlled anyway. i don't trust the government (and other people, reading some stories of "unvaccinated" being kicked out of trains by the police using force and handcuffs) to not act like psychopaths.
with a car i can at least have some backup-canisters of fuel, and - for now - nobody can control every road.
i fucking hate that i feel to have to operate at this paranoia-level, but who knows what they'll come up next 💁

tinfoil

@bonifartius lol that us a drop in the bucket. Fossil fuels have SO MUCH energy.

Tinfoil hat aside, @bonifartius, I live in a place where vehicles are only facilitation, not precondition for transportation, i.e. walking is tiring but it doesn’t kill people. I can’t imagine if one has to fully rely on the electric grid if e.g. temperature can regularly drop below -20, especially outside of urban area. And in 1st world who needs a car in urban area anyway.

IMHO electric cars are a huge waste of resources, especially for the batteries which are ironically not (even close to fully) recyclable. If they can cut down personal vehicles in urban area they can solve both environmental and traffic issues, but I’ll put the hat back on and say the multi-trillion-dollar car industry are bribing^Wlobbying hard against that.

EVs are like paper straws, they are still as profitable while maintaining a better image, but end up in the landfill anyway. Well at least the straws don’t have backdoor and planned obsolescence builtin.

@cnx here in germany one can rather easily go shopping by bike, even in most rural areas. the problem is that society has put up so many expectations and is so hyperindividualized that it often just isn't practical. people often work someplace not in bike range, if you have kids stuff gets even harder. it really takes up much energy to swim against this stream, and many don't have it because of the daily grind.

@bonifartius
Lebst du in Deutschland, Österreich?

tinfoil

@bonifartius
Es ist komisch deine positive Einstellung zu sehen

Ich bin froh dass du stark bist! :02_bounce_blush:

Wenn ich binge über Deutschland lese, werde ich einfach sehr ängstlich und traurig...

NEVER GIVE UP :02_bounce_blush:

tinfoil
