Qoto.org blocking, genocide mention
Qoto.org says it has zero tolerance for hatred, but also "does not currently block any Fediverse servers".
I messaged Qoto admin to ask whether they would block servers that incited genocide. Admin replied Qoto would not block such servers.
I asked about the danger of radicalisation, and they said "(people) aren't going to read some random thing on the internet and turn bad. It just doesn't happen."
Have blocked qoto.org, would encourage others to do same.
Qoto.org blocking, genocide mention
@FediThing Admin either has a VERY poor understanding of how the last 6-7 years and even prior have been around the internet or is purposefully part of the problem.
No I recognize the problem with the deplorable racism and sexism and anti-LGBTQ nonsense around the internet. I sympathize.
My policy has always been about protecting the lives of the LGBTQ community as a top priority and at their request. I have explained this multiple times. The safety of their lives trumps all, nothing more and nothing less.
Not one user from our server has ever shown to become radicalized... but we have saved lives... I call that a win and I wont change our policy, putting LGBTQ people at risk for lives simply because its unpopular, FULL STOP.
@freemo
I don’t necessarily see how shutting inherently bad servers out would put people at risk of anything. I’m glad your instance has saved lives but I’m not sure how that’s related to the policy mentioned by @FediThing.
I’m sure you’re a good person with good intentions, and my initial response to the toot might’ve been assuming a bit much based on nothing, but your policy seems hard to defend in some scenarios (1/2)
@freemo
I understand this wasn’t the initial scenario and might be off-topic, but now I’m curious. If there was an entire instance dedicated to harassing folks of the LGBTQ community, and they were targeting many users that are within your instance, how would you respond?
I see value in not fediblocking anyone from anyone else, as it can lead to its own abuse from admins. Allowing the user to decide is valid. But in scenarios like this it can be too much to handle
If you dont understand how it puts their lives at risk then you clearly didnt read the article I wrote that started all this. It illustrates, in some detail, exactly why that is the case.
Please read the explanation here. I cover quite clearly it puts their lives at risk and as I said has been known to save lives in the past. If you still have questions or objections after you read my side of it I will be more than happy to hear and discuss them:

@freemo
Thank you for sharing, this did put things into perspective.
My opinion on the issue at large still stands, though. It varies case by case, nothing is black and white. Both fediblocking and having an open platform have pros and cons. While I understand your intent, and I’m sure you’ve fostered a wonderful community with great people (you yourself seem nice too) I can’t say I’m surprised at all about how this has spread to others.
@freemo
I hate to say it but we just unfortunately live in a world where the vision of a completely connected fediverse is impossible to create and maintain without these kinds of problems.
Again I can see both sides of the situation, as we’ve seen positive and negative outcomes from both, and in some cases I feel pretty conflicted about admin power vs user choice, because both can be valid. I think some fediblocking is far too overboard, while some open platforms are just terrible.
@JustYourBud Thanks, have a good day. I too enjoyed the conversation
