@darth this comparison never made sense to me. Who cares when water freezes, unless your dealing specifically with water that seems like a horrible way to measure temperature for a human. As for the date scale.. the us males the most sense as it starts with the least number of cardinaly (month 12) and progresses in increasing cardinality.

the better argument for metric honestly is order of 10 prefixes, thats really the only solid argument for the metric system as superior, and its a damn good one.

I will just keep using "kilomile" and "centinch" and get the best of both wolds :)

@freemo whether we start with freezing water of freezing brine it's obvious that temperature scale scientists love to use something frozen as their preferred starting point. Not to mention that D.G. Fahrenheit is European which makes the whole thing even weirder.

But the rest of the stuff tingles my OCD.

@darth Neither freezing brine or freezing water makes sense as a reason to pick either system. They may be how the system is defined, but not necessarily what we consider in selecting it.

The fact is fareinheight coincides with human expiernce of temperature much better than celsius. F has 0 to 100 and anything outside of that range is more or less lethal to a human without protections and fits nicely within the human range of temp, unlike C which doesnt really align well at all.

Seems like what scientists want to use should be the least of our worries, it should be what is best suited for your average person, and I'd argue that is more so F than C.

@freemo ~60F is the minimum I can handle but I guess I agree about 100F

@darth 60F to maybe 80F is the ideal comfort zone.. but chances are you wont die below 60F :)

@freemo I am pretty sensitive to cold, although this isn't really about me but about an average person, yeah?

Right now it's 2C outside and I have my radiator set to 23C and I'm sitting right next to it. I really need a ton of layers of clothes to be outside when it's near 0C, but the wind is by far the biggest nemesis at these temps. Not the temp itself.

@darth Sure i get that. But we are talking about survival here not preference.

Chances if its within 0 to 100C your not going to die.. outside of that range without proper protection or fluids you very well may.

@freemo the following isn't an argument for any scale, but I would really love to see people settle with just one.

@darth Obviously id support moving to metric despite my complains simply because its an easier path to standardization.

@freemo I have a lot more going on in my head regarding standardization. This may sound a bit extreme due to preserving various cultures, but I was born in Yugoslavia where I grew up with no computer understanding my language. Due to this my path to IT career was slightly harder since I started with computers at the age of 6, but started understanding English at the age of ... 10?

Nowadays there are zero videogames (actually one) that speak Croatian. Kids age antry to gaming is elevated for it,

@freemo ...I rushed my previous post, but the gist of it is that I would like to see Humans speak an universal language in the future.

@kravietz @freemo ah yes... that one is interesting. I already understand like 95% of it :)

@darth

That was the idea. I also understand like 90% of Croatian but the problem when speaking is that many words in Slavic languages have common roots but different meaning, which is confusing. E.g. in Croatian "thanks" is "hvala" but in Polish etc it's "dzięki", so projects like Slovio try to unify these divergent parts.

I have never heard croation and no idea what it looks like or resembles. Then again I'm not much of a linguist at all, its one of the worst subjects for me to learn.
