A re-introduction:

- I live in a small town in the middle of the Alberta prairie with my wife and kids.

- I work from home as the IT sysadmin for a private school board that serves 6000+ students throughout the province.

- I spend my spare time with strange liquids: photo chemicals, beer, and kombucha

- English is my first language, but I'm decent in Dutch thanks to my dad.

The single dumbest thing one can say when asked if you can speak with their manager is "I am the manager" (unless of course they are actually the boss)

When it comes to war movies that are kid-friendly enough to show to the whole family, Sgt. Stubby: An Unlikely Hero (2018) was actually enjoyable. Not the greatest visually but a fun true story to help kids get a grasp of what was happening in WWI.

"Guns don't kill people; people with guns kill people" is a fair point about gun violence.

But then why do we say cars kill people?

Since the invention of tools we have been going from learning how to do a thing to learning how to do a thing that does the thing. I don't know where I was going with this but hey

Some don't seem to realise that Amazon is a shopping mall. It's not helpful to treat it like it's some niche boutique that one doesn't often consider. "Five finds from Amazon" or "I bought it on Amazon" are not very useful comments.

My society needs to get its act together and agree upon how urgency is defined across communication mediums before people hate me for not understanding them correctly

News stories about people winning lotteries weird me out. They didn’t do anything special, it publicly labels a newly-wealthy (potentially easy targets for theft or swindling), it encourages more of the lamest form (IMO) of gambling, and feels more like advertising than anything else.
That being said, I wouldn’t complain about a “XYZ Charity Lottery Collects Gazillion Dollars for Hospitals” story, maybe mentioning the winners off-handedly.

Tenochtitlan sounds like a fascinating place to have lived.

I can't help but take it personally when someone complains about technology after I explain something to them. Surely, I hope, they aren't shooting the messenger but it sure can feel that way.

Chicago mix is so hit-or-miss
