For a FLOSS project this mature, Mastodon development is surprisingly opaque.

- Not clear where maintainers are communicating (certainly not Github!),
- thin contributing and getting-started guidelines. Which I'd love to help with, but...
- the docs repo is practically moribund
- no PR template
- long stale PR queue with occasional hit-and-run maintainer interaction.

I want to pitch in. How does one help a project that makes it hard to start helping?

Turns out everyone communicates in a Discord server that is never mentioned anywhere in the project docs, and which you get access to by being a Patreon patron. Meanwhile, the project references a moribund IRC channel.

@avdi prob poor documentation and maintenance practices. Which in turn speaks of a very small development community, probably without stable leadership. Lots of FOSS projects live or die due to a single person at the heart
