Believe it or not, they have been mass producing electric cars since the 90s and even today have technologies that are ahead of the market en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_P is the flagship, but Yaris, bZ4X, Mirai, Eco Explorer all stand out with their remarkable engineering
