any artist worth his salt will see good AI art as competition

@skells I'd start offering "clean up" services for AI generated art, because it's damn good, but not all the way there yet

(I'd also start researching how to build DIY EMP weapons, because that may be the only way out)

@harblinger figure out what it's good at, what's it's not, use it for the former and step up your game on the latter

@harblinger computers didn't put mathematicians out of business, just extended their reach

@skells yeah, economically it killed a lot of mathematician's jobs though

spiritually, sure, the machine can extend our reach in a lot of dimensions

@harblinger no it killed the jobs of people who sat around doing raw calculation and added jobs in coding, computer science, database management, IT...

@skells endgame with this line of thinking is that Klaus Schwab is right and most people are useless eaters

@harblinger my line of thinking is that people learn how to turn tools to their advantage, computers have created more jobs than they have destroyed

the Klaus Schwab deal is thinking that you can hose printed money at 50 large corporations you control and magically create a technological singularity

@skells I disagree. True art is a manifestation of the human spirit, and addresses the world in a way that requires true consciousness, so I think there's a certain limit of beauty or creativity that an AI just can't achieve.

@genmaicha yeah but your composition is weak step it up HAL got that shit down

@skells Technique is just technique. In the 19th century, art academies produced artists with extremely good technique, but their art is more or less ignored because the Impressionists created much more evocative pieces (which were mocked at the time) and broke the old technical tradition of painting emotionless, allegorical scenes from classical literature and history.

@genmaicha this is my point, AI will drive artists to innovate

@skells I guess where my opinion differs is that I don't think AI art will be much of a factor at all

@genmaicha I think it will have a similar effect that computers had in maths and physics, people still do plenty of pen and paper mathematics but simulations are used to increase the reach and possibilities available.

artists will blend the strengths of what AI can do with their own unique skills, insights and ideas and create art which is greater than the sum of its parts

@skells so in other words, AI will become a medium? I can see that.

@genmaicha yeah I think that's a good way of putting it, although the real pay dirt will be on learning to synthesise is with the rest of your work/ideas

@genmaicha imagine Raphael doing The Academy but with hundreds of his own sketches teaching a computer to learn a grander composition, which then gives him a rough outline to work upon

loads of renaissance artists had understudies who painted things for them, this is just a more accessible/programmable version

@genmaicha then imagine someone using AI and human understudies in conjunction!

@genmaicha Jeff is killer at soft materials, Hannah knows how to get the skin tone just right

@skells it could also be a method of mass-production, like how Warhol used silkscreens
