I’m an English major and a writer.
Old habits die hard.
But I’m always trying to learn new things, including communication nuances.

All of which is background leading up to this poll:

Should I stop adding periods at the end of texts that are intended to be open-ended and invite a reply (i.e. where I don’t want to appear offish or as if I’m trying to end the discussion)?

@reay

Don't you normally add .... to the end of text that is open.

@That_One_Guy @reay

I think that is fine, to do that, people know (or should) know what it means.

@zleap
I would hope so but I know they're not teaching cursive in schools anymore and my wife made my 11-year-old daughter learn it over the summer last year. So maybe punctuation is not as heavily taught as before.
@reay

@That_One_Guy @reay

I think they have to use cursive here in the UK now, and even punctuation / grammar are seen as important.

I guess people at the top of the education systems feel it is not needed in the Internet age.

That fails to take in to account we work globally, you may end up with 1/2 your team being in a country where this IS important, and you would be expected to communicate properly with them.

@zleap
Oh I agree completely! My daughter is in a school that teaches everything. I pay for it but she's getting the education I feel is necessary to be successful.

:)

Education has been neglected for so long, we are now trying to play catch up and teach kids stuff that we were not taught properly at school.

@zleap
👍

They've made it a political argument in my country, ignoring the failing kids. I have a college level education and my wife a graduate degree (law) so it mattered to us.

I seem to remember under either Clinton or Obama there was No child left behind for the election, what has happened.

Problem is elections are for 4 years, education is for about 14 years, so you need a long term, cross party strategy, i guess so people get a decent K-12 education and one that is consistent, sure you do need to modify the curriculum to keep up but set high standards of teaching / learning support across the country.

@zleap
George Bush Junior signed that act. As to what happened I don't know, but I feel that way about a lot of the issues these days.
@reay

@That_One_Guy @reay

Ah, that was it, I guess since George Bush Junior we have had Obama and then Trump so no consistent policy and no bipartisan collaboration to fix things long term.

@zleap
Bipartisan? I'm not familiar with that word, I think Webster's Dictionary removed that back in 2016.

I think it means cross party consensus, i haver heard it mentioned on the news in relation to US politics, but yes, politics is so polarised then that is something that is very unlikely to happen, in a lot of cases.

@zleap
I have very little faith in our political system at this point. I'd emigrate somewhere else but no one will take me! 😆
@reay

@zleap
Yeah I've read something about this thing called "Brexit" and it sounded troublesome at best.
