I dreamt I was learning a language with two important words, wimak and mak. You used ‘mak’ in factual sentences where the basis for your assertion was anything you could touch (including taste) and ‘wimak’ if what you knew came from dreams, communication with ghosts, or intuition. Stuff you saw or heard was an unmarked case. People argued about whether tv or internet was wimak or not. #linguistdreams
@lolennui mmm. yeah, I think it was on "How I Built This", one of the guests says 'we know how to cure every kind of cancer...in mice', but we lack the translational know how to take it to humans

@eamon i think you may be reading more into what I said than there is to read... my main thing is I try not to do things that won't have the effect I want
@eamon
speaking generally, I don't think of businesses that way. If my hypothetical friend was fired without cause, say, and the person who made the decision had a real stake in the business I did with the company--meaning my doing business with them actually benefited that person--then I would probably not shop there or whatever.
In contrast, if some company president made a business decision to cut staff, including my friend, I don't see why I should try to punish that. I just don't see the point.
@rchopgood I just keep thinking about how dorky it must look with the camera guy rotating the camera all around while they're fiddling with cards
@eamon genuine question, because I don't get the logic: why would you boycott a company for that?
It's not like your friend would get their job back if you boycotted the business.

@jaredwsmith some specific smart people?
Finally figured out how to succinctly describe what’s gone wrong with Google Search: They focused so hard on figuring out the *one* single most relevant thing to your query that it just tries to find *that* thing, to the exclusion of anything else.
If you’re lucky, your results will be: (1) ad, (2) thing you want, (3) basically a copy of the thing you want, (4) another copy, etc.
You can’t easily find all the possibilities for a category. So you can’t use it to really explore a topic in breadth anymore. You can’t find variations on a theme.
It’s like if you asked the server at a restaurant for the menu, and instead of giving you one with all the options, they instead look you over, decide you want a hamburger, and when you ask for options just give you the same hamburger with slight tweaks.

@trinsec I've watched a few episodes now and I like it. The first episode, IDK if it was the translation or what, but the humor was a bit...telegraphic. It picks up after that though. I like the pacing too: it's enough so I don't feel "hungry" for more entertainment after an episode.
Thanks for the rec😁
@chrisamaphone read the article. I guess it's just Ko's section of the world during that time. I didn't spend much time in CS academia professionally after undergrad, so maybe there's something there I missed.
@chrisamaphone haven't read the article yet...but my first thought is "CS didn't teach you that". I learned most of my CS lessons from books.
