It increasingly appears that Twitter has become an H-1B trap. Remaining employees reportedly are heavily skewed toward H-1B visa holders who can't leave Twitter without losing their ability to legally stay in the U.S. Not quite indentured servitude, but in the same movie.

We're gonna spend most of this slow news week reminding y'all about early voting. Seems like the best use of our time

@louiscouture If a LGBT person is called a groomer just because they are LGBT, then it is a slur, same as with any other stereotype that is propagated to denigrate a targeted group.

We've arrived on Mastodon!

Following on from @ihmjhu on Twitter, this feed will provide updates on the conferences, publications, news, and events at or related to the Department of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University.

An abandoned building in the Pennsylvanian town of Brownsville. Find out why almost the entire downtown was left to rot: abandonedamerica.us/brownsvill

Do not use Mastodon for anything that you’re not OK being 100% public. I’m surprised this hasn’t come up more here.

Journalist @adamdavidson on moving to Mastodon: "I think we got lazy as a field and we let Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and, god help us, Elon Musk and their staff decide all these major journalistic questions."

@TinaThePerson @LowlyAdjunct @BlackAzizAnansi Thanks for sharing. That sounds like some kind of horror movie...thinking you've escaped some curse just to have it reappear. I hope the Mastodon network holds up okay when it is eventually attacked.

@TinaThePerson @LowlyAdjunct @BlackAzizAnansi The psy-ops could only work because we were open to it -- didn't know how the world worked and didn't know what we wanted. We've always had this paranoia in our culture, just look at the KKK and the John Birch Society. p.s. Glad your brother finally saw what the GOP has been doing and came back.

@jakeduhjake How long did it take for you to see it? At the national level, it seemed to only take hold after 2008 or 2010 (as I recall).

Could you tell me what my profile photo looks like to you? I used to have a pair of dove wings (white/gray). Now I have a flower (Orange/yellow). It looks like other servers have cached my old photo. Which you can see at these links (if you really care)

Islamophobia - before 2010?

@BlackAzizAnansi How long did it take for you to see anger towards Muslims? I was a bit removed from any Muslim communities -- at the national level it seemed like Bush tried to avoid blaming Muslims, but by 2010 there definitely was a fully developed Islamophobic movement (I remember the Cordoba House backlash at that time, and the 'sharia law' panic, but the 'Rachel Ray Dunkin Donut scarf incident was in 2008 )

Iraq invasion and 2020 election rejection

@BlackAzizAnansi The 2003 invasion of Iraq was one milestone -- the Bush administration was clearly just finding rationalizations to invade, yet many people said "we have to trust the President", and the Democrats who opposed the invasion were totally inept. I'd call it imperialism rather than fascism, but it's all part of the same process.
The next milestone was Jan 6 2022. Again, Trump was clearly looking for any excuse to reject the election results and establish a dictatorship. Yet there have been no real consequences for Trump or the people who supported him.

I didn’t like irc due to toxicity & harassment so I left, despite having & making tons of friends there.
I didn’t like Facebook, especially the racism, so I stopped posting there.
I have posted a couple hundred posts on Instagram, thirst traps & cat pics & food mostly.
I never liked Twitter either, but reporters would use it to find me & it served to help get my expertise out in the news.
I tried posting a family holiday meal toot here hashtagged with Thanksgiving & was immediately informed by someone who doesn’t even follow me & isn’t on the same mastodon instance that I should have put a CW on it in case my food pics upset a vegetarian. I deleted it.
Honestly I don’t know if I’ll ever post that much anywhere ever again. I don’t have time.
It seems immediately tone-policey here. And block-splainey. At least that’s been my experience so far. Honeys, I know how to block & mute. I’m likely much older than you & have deep lived experience in being harassed online from the very first places one could be harassed online. Please don’t give me unsolicited advice. Ever.
It’s just as well. I’m very tired & I don’t see the point of posting in a brand new place for misogyny to find me, harass me, then pile more well-meaning or ill-meaning explainers-of-how-the-Internet-works Reply Guys into my mentions.
I’ll post whatever the fuck I want, where I want, & I’m not obligated to respond to anything.
If you need to reach me for my work, email info@Lutasecurity.com & if you’re a member of the press, press@Lutasecurity.com is where I will always direct you, even if you have my Signal number.
Why?
Because I’m a CEO & a mom & I do not have time to route & schedule your requests. Boundaries are healthy & I’m happy to remind anyone of mine.
Happy Sunday & may your boundaries be respected by all.
