I love biology and teaching people about what is happening in cells. I also am really interested in microscopy.
I also like cats, horses and horseback riding, fish keeping (I have two aquariums), video games-particularly the Half-Life franchise and Half Life mods, and I have recently gotten into VR (NOT META!) so if you want to chat about any of these topics that would be great!

Halloween Pennant dragonflies (Celithemis eponina) are one of my favorite insects to photograph. Sometimes they allow you photograph them for hours. #dragonfly #dragonflies #Odonata #Illinois #nature #photography #wildlifephotography

Hey NIHDirector and Mike Lauer--are you on here? --I hope you paying attention to the UC strike. If you had not noticed yet, the pay of grad students and postdocs is way too low, and the minimum NIH grant hasn't increased for decades. We need to pay our students and postdocs more, both because its right (most important) and because otherwise no one will do this any more (reality).

Infantino's Ignominiousness
My own morale dilemma is conflicting.
A proud Welsh man wanting to support my team in a #WorldCup for the first time in my life yet even if I wanted to go the host could punish me with up to 7yrs in prison for simply existing.
Should I feel guilt for watching it?

Article in Science Advances showing that higher levels of productivity at elite institutions is "largely explained by their substantial labor advantage rather than inherent differences in talent".
Lines up with my personal experience tbh.

Who else is frustrated when trying to perform a method in a paper, and the authors state "As described previously-citation ". You look up the citation to read "as described previously-citation ". At times like this I feel like I am falling down the rabbit hole.

Lee’s paper is finally out! A tour de force characterization of a Chlamydia protein that repurposes a regulator of F-actin to do something it doesn’t normally do: breakdown epithelial cell junctions. https://www.cell.com/cell-host-microbe/pdf/S1931-3128(22)00526-1.pdf#.Y3eVCKKTwsQ.twitter

Please join me in sharing a big “thank you” on behalf of us newer #Mastodon users to all the folks at @Mastodon including @Gargron and the team, as well as the Instance admins and existing user base, and everyone else in the #fediverse. You all created an amazing, innovative platform that is finally getting the recognition it deserves and provides a better alternative to legacy #socialmedia platforms that are currently imploding. My sincere thanks!

John von Neumann’s wife, Klára Dán, asked him to put a picture of an elephant in his book “Theory of Games and Economic Behavior”. He complied, hiding one in plain sight in a set theoretic diagram.
There’s reason to believe Klára’s code was the first modern-style code ever to run on a computer.
You can dive into Klára’s life and work by listening to season 2 of “Lost Women of Science” https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/e1-the-grasshopper/id1590670779?i=1000555799822

@juergen_hubert @northfolk I honestly I think the teller forgot halfway through. Reading edited folktale collections, one tends to forget that oral tellers made all kinds of mistakes in spoken word.
I get criticism from people for "tampering with the original text." Dude, the original text did not make sense because the storyteller got distracted halfway through.
