@kofanchen @albertcardona We have worked very hard over the past 6 months in Cambridge Genetics Fly facility to reduce the impact of energy and water usage on reusing glass. New washing machines and a new post autoclave soak have dramatically cut our water and energy. Many of the places we provide food for outside the Department are now switching to glass from plastic and we have the potential to service more folks.
I now added to our lab webpage a description of our approach to #publication, please have a look.

Please share, reuse, criticize as you see fit. We are constantly evolving our thinking on the issue.
📣🔎 We are looking for a PhD candidate!

Protip:
"I include two guest lectures from my university’s librarians: one on literature searching and reference management, and one on “deep reading”. University librarians are, in my experience, eager to help with teaching; I strongly recommend involving them in a writing course (or, for that matter, in any other course)."
We would like to make tungsten needles for doing our dissections. Does anyone know where we can get size 0.008 tungsten wire? We would prefer to have it in the form of 3 ft rods if possible. #Drosophila #microscopy
Probably my best catch this year from Bluesky.

@historiographos.bsky.social
I will never recover from this student email.
“Good Afternoon Professor Penniman,
Hope you had a great break! I was wondering if it would be acceptable to use sources from the late 1900’s for our final paper (I found an interesting paper from 1994). I there a cut off date of publication? See you tomorrow,”

Check out this great new study led by Katie Schretter, investigating fighting female fruit flies -- who headbutt, shove & fence each other to guard prime egg-laying territory -- to ultimately better understand aggressive behavior in humans. https://www.janelia.org/news/fighting-fruit-flies-help-researchers-understand-why-we-stay-angry
Cool science!
Really proud to share this latest publication with a dream team.
We describe a new Drosophila stock for cGMP imaging. Plus: A microscopy approach that enables FRET analysis made easy with almost any (spectral) confocal.
Plus: #openaccess at really affordable fees.

"Led by German expert Stefanie Haustein, a group of scientists has now calculated the turnover of the “oligopoly” that controls this new market. Using mainly public funds, the scientific community paid the five large publishers $1.06 billion in four years. And according to this estimate, the sum covers only the fees to publish open access studies."
PhD in Cell Biology
Currently a Postdoc in Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Iowa
I love biology and teaching people about what is happening in cells. I also am really interested in microscopy.
I also like cats, horses and horseback riding, fish keeping (I have two aquariums), video games-particularly the Half-Life franchise and Half Life mods, and I have recently gotten into VR (NOT META!) so if you want to chat about any of these topics that would be great!
