“Serious New Warning As Google AI Targets Billions Of Private Messages”
The AI Bubble is anti-privacy, anti-labour, anti-quality, and in an all-out war against anything resembling a creative practice. This is who you’re siding with when you’re using these tools. https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2024/01/28/new-details-free-ai-upgrade-for-google-and-samsung-android-users-leaks/?sh=3396b4317a94
@craftycat @baldur Switch to what? iPhone, which tracks your location and sends it to Apple (and will probably have this exact same problem too within 6 months), or something else that no app makers support?
@craftycat It's less a choice by users and more a choice by app vendors. I've been there. I tried really hard to make Windows Phone 8 work (it was a great platform), but the lack of app support is what eventually killed it. Fewer users means fewer apps means fewer users means bankrupt platform.
@LouisIngenthron And what informs the choice on which platforms to develop apps for? Number of users. If more people prioritised privacy over access to tiktok or angry birds, more apps would be developed for other platforms. At the end of the day it's a choice, you make yours and I make mine, but don't get snarky with people just because they're not spineless fucks. 👍
@craftycat Good luck with that. Like I said, I've been there before.
@LouisIngenthron @craftycat iPhone Messages is end-to-end encrypted and does all of its processing on device so there's an objective difference between the two platforms in terms of privacy. If privacy is your thing, iOS is objectively the less bad option of the two.
@baldur @craftycat According to the article you linked, Google's is also E2EE, and you can opt out of the AI assistant, so wouldn't they be a wash in that regard?
Plus, are you sure Siri doesn't have access to them already? That doesn't run locally, does it?
@LouisIngenthron @baldur Siri is an Apple service, what's that got to do with Android?
@craftycat I was responding to Baldur's reply about Apple's security.
@LouisIngenthron @craftycat Yes. I’m sure. It only sends to the server what you ask it to and audio and ML processing is done on-device.
E2EE is meaningless if you’re actually sending the messages off-device to be processed and trained on. And an opt out is meaningless in a messaging app because you’d also need everybody you talk to to opt out as well to get proper E2EE assurances back. It’s not a wash
Google is objectively worse than Apple on privacy. (This isn’t hard admittedly)
@baldur Good point. Worth noting, though, that the article you posted said that Apple is specifically working on breaking it in the exact same way:
@LouisIngenthron @baldur Apple is obviously out. I'd rather have a smaller app selection than have Google read my in depth private conversations with friends and family. Google and Apple having essentially sole power on the market is a choice by the users, not some magical natural order that we have to obey.
