@Pat @taz It doesn't matter "where you are" when our energy grid is still powered by fossil fuels.

Is there some kind of new law that every new song has to be about an old country song?

Or did Nashville just completely run out of subjects to sing about?

@taz @Pat And yet California wants to completely phase out combustion engines to get more EVs on their overloaded and overpriced grid 🤦‍♂️
They really are living in a different world over there.
(Not that my home state of Florida is much different in that respect)

Mastodon meta / why I'm not following you

@phae Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't your second paragraph kind of demonstrating the point? Yes, some instances will end up as Hellsite 2.0, but others will defederate from them and provide more reclusive and serene spaces.

That's my favorite part of this system... how diverse and decentralized it is, and how adaptable that makes it for those who need more protection / safer spaces.

@Pat @taz "*will* switch" is the key.

Eventually, EVs will be significantly better.

But we're nowhere close to that yet.

@Pat @taz You seem to have lost the thread.

We're talking about how much petroleum *power plants* use to power your car. They burn the gas just like my car does.

That sense of exhilaration when you see a Twitter friend join Mastodon and you're like HI OMG, MAYBE IT'S HAPPENING

@Pat @taz

Your link doesn't lead to a page with any statistics.

This one, however, has it at 12.69 kWh/gallon for petroleum liquids.

@Pat @taz So, based on average energy prices, your battery can only store less than 20 kWh at a time? What's your range on that?

@Pat @taz That's not true.

The rare earth minerals they require need a *lot* more labor to produce and refine than simple iron or steel... and we're starting to run low on them.

@Pat @taz 0.08 gallons of petroleum per kWh. At 4 miles per kWh, you're at about 50 miles to the gallon. Which is directly comparable to pretty much every hybrid available, and not that much worse than the traditional economy vehicles.
Now, if you get solar panels installed on your house to charge your EV, that's *actually* doing something. But the sad part is, it still isn't enough, because the earth is really really big and our individual choices don't make a bit of difference. The change has to come from the top and apply collectively.

@Pat @taz Until the power grid is no longer powered by fossil fuels, EVs contribute to that every bit as much as standard vehicles.

@taz I agree the name change thing is dumb, but I don't think *anyone* changing their own footprint is gonna solve this, so that's also really just virtue signaling as well.

Collective controls are really the only way forward.

@eamonn_kerins I feel like you're gonna have some issues with sampling bias here, lol

Always listen to Elizabeth Warren

@murshedz Why regulate it?

The problem is fixing itself as we speak.

@cathygellis Then use VLC. You can use it to open the stream, and then reveal the actual source URL of the media itself. From there, it's pretty easy to save.

@grahamp In case you (or anyone else) didn't know, CamelCase has actually been around for a while, most commonly used by software engineers.

There's actually some debate about whether it's still considered CamelCase if the first letter is capitalized. Some folks want to use Camel/Dromedary for cap/lower, others prefer Pascal/Camel. Still others use Camel willy-nilly to refer to both!

And that's our daily dose of pedantry for the day.
