Love @mmasnick calling out Huffman's crazy trust-fund-thought-they-hit-a-triple-because-they-were-born-on-3rd-base-energy here for their behavior surrounding #reddit users.

At a bar and I just watched an extremely-white old-guy band redneckify "No Woman No Cry" and... wait... yep, that's a little blood pooled in my ear.

@Theraviranjankr That's complete fanboy nonsense. Reusable launch craft have been around for decades. Including, most famously, the space shuttle program, which was initially designed two years before Musk was even born.

@alecui Eh, a mammal's a mammal. 🤷 I know at least one person who looks pretty squirrelly, lol 😃

Considering making a search engine specifically designed to penalize SEO... Could be fun.

@w7voa In other words, "we fucked up, and now we're doubling down by giving our most important users the boot"

@cgervasi I'm sure the voice was very convincing. It's the content of the voice that matters. How embarrassing would it be if your mom confused you for a group of scammers who never met you? She should know you well enough to be able to verify you're real even against a convincing fake.

@olives Patreon isn't a government entity, so I can't see how that precedent would apply...

@mentallyalex Like any computer system, we have our numeric IDs (SSNs in America). Our moniker shouldn't really matter to that... But I do like the socially-driven aspect of nicknames. It feels like a community thing.

@mentallyalex That's not so different, but one big departure is that, offline, we don't often choose our nicknames. They're given to us by friends or family. Did you choose "Alex" or did your parents just want to reserve your full name for when you're in trouble? 🤔😃
Even when we do try to choose our nicknames, whether they stick is entirely dependent on whether our friends buy in to the new moniker.

That's very different from online, where we can assign ourselves different handles based on the community we're engaging with.

@mentallyalex On one hand, yes, absolutely, that would be cool.

On the other hand, I'm not sure I want to hear my uncle call my cousin NoobPwnr69 at the Thanksgiving table...

@mimsical I'm an independent SE, so I can't speak to the hiring part, but I've definitely noticed a boost to productivity when using these tools, especially in new languages/environments.

That said, though, it does require experience to call out the bullshit, so I do have concerns that its use would reinforce poor patterns and habits for less experienced developers. Low-level coders may have the most to gain from the tech, but they're also the most likely to lose.

Like, We already know, but how much space can you even claim still exists between this and just saying "I'm racist and will use thinly-veiled racism as a political opportunist"?

@mentallyalex Lol, it is pronounced the American way, with a hard s.

What is the "titanic event that's hurting people" you alluded to? If that's not too probing a question. I'm a little out of the loop at the moment.

@ThinkingSapien That game was so disappointing... Every bit of story *and* gameplay felt so disparate from the rest. None of the story actually drew me in, and that should be the main draw of such a setting! Also, I just really hated the voicework of the main character, so that didn't help.

Watching a breathless segment about a mom who got on the news about how she was scammed for money by someone who used to simulate her daughter's voice.

What a tremendous self-own it is to get on the news and announce that you can't recognize your own daughter. I can't imagine how shitty that makes the daughter feel.

@seb321 @oliphant You literally have a constitutional right to protest in the streets. I've done it myself with the BLM movement. That freedom is what I'm fighting for.

@seb321 @oliphant We're slipping towards fascism because people, like you, have so demonized their ideological opponents that they're willing to strip them of their rights, which is a slippery spiral.

Do you really not realize that by advocating for the silencing of your enemies that you're playing right into the fascism game yourself?
