@argv_minus_one The choice of distro was not mine to make.
@freemo Containerized microservices are very useful tools, but that feels like square-peg/round-hole. Not everything needs to be a microservice.
@freemo It's a dedicated server, not cloud.
@freemo The server was provided by a client, running CentOS 7. All I have is SSH access. So, I had to configure by hand, and snapd is the recommended way to do so by the certbot team for that distro.
Also, fwiw, on Windows, I just downloaded ACME program and ran it. It didn't need any dependencies.
Why I don't like #Linux:
Oh, you want to host HTTPS? Install a self-signed certificate into Apache with certbot and Let's Encrypt. (That mumbo jumbo is the easy part, and is the same as Windows. But here's where it takes a turn...)
Oh, you want to install certbot? First, install snapd, a whole other framework for installing dependencies because apparently the one built into the OS isn't good enough.
Oh, snapd is mysteriously failing? Get to google, son.
Oh, Google has enshittified and there are no relevant results? Ahahaha 💩
So, anyway, apparently the answer was that at one obscure point in the process, I was supposed to type the word "socket" where every other service I've ever installed needed the word "service" and I didn't notice the difference. That's two hours of my life I'm never getting back.
Wait, what? How in the hell is it legal for one man to unilaterally remove an official that the people democratically elected?
This essay by @pluralistic perfectly captures my own reasons for taking a pass on Threads and Bluesky. ActivityPub is open and federated, and these attributes are important enough to outweigh its (current) relative deficiencies, both technical and social. Any walled garden, however idyllic, becomes a prison.
Sacrificing freedom for convenience is problematic. Sacrificing freedom for a brief period of convenience followed by endless exploitation is stupid.

@w7voa A national monument or a national park?
I used to work at a restaurant that served these really good fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. They were made pretty regularly, so you'd never get a cookie that was more than an hour or two old. Despite this someone would inevitably ask for some fresh out of the oven. The problem with this was twofold:
1. They took nearly 15 minutes to bake, way longer than anyone was willing to wait.
2. If you know anything about baking soft chewy cookies, when they come out of the oven they are basically just molten goo, we had to wait 10 minutes before we were even allowed to take them off the pan.
So, we'd always tell people these things, and at least a couple times a week, someone would demand we do it anyway, and call the manager when we handed them a hot bag of cookie goo 15 minutes later. The restaurant eventually got rid of those cookies for something that was pre-made that tasted like Dollar Store cookies.
I thought about this a lot during the height of the Covid Pandemic, and every time a politician disagrees with a scientist about climate change. Anyway, welcome to Dollar Store Planet.
@chrishudsonjr Never heard of him before today, and now I've heard of him twice. Is he Twitter's main character today or something?
@AmicusThespis @stavvers Why? Some of us enjoy having friends who push us to improve and excel.
@tungol Sure, the dipshit ratio is never zero, and that behaviour should never be tolerated.
But saying that you can't ever offer unsolicited advice because some dudes are dicks about it is like saying you shouldn't ever protest because some people riot. Just because there's a wrong way to do something doesn't mean we should discourage the right way.
piss
@turboquokka Nobody over the age of ten turns it "into a distance competition". It's just physics.
@peterdrake For future reference, on Windows you can run dxdiag which has an option to save quite a lot of information about your system, especially GPU stuff.
@w7voa Can we please stop pretending this is news?
piss
@stavvers @floppyplopper Y'all go try peeing from a yard away and tell me how much makes it in. 😆
@waitworry @stavvers That's an interesting point.
How well do women generally take unsolicited advice from other women offline?
@StrangeNoises @stavvers Same as smoking. Tobacco made it "cool" back in cowboy days and it stuck.
