@GramrgednAngel @kegill Even so. A private company paying someone for more than half a year for a job they can't do seems insane. That's what government disability benefits are for.

@LevZadov @georgetakei What does this have to do with what I posted? If you're posting unrelated thoughts, you shouldn't use the reply button.

@giff @georgetakei It doesn't. Nothing will.

But it provides off ramps for radicalization and informing people early helps prevent them from getting stuck in those rabbit holes that lead to radicalization in the first place.

Most importantly, this is the option that does the most good while causing the least harm.

@kegill 28 weeks of sick leave?!? That's more than half the year!!

What the hell are all of you doing that you spend more than half your time sick?

@mentallyalex The only way to win is not to participate at all.

...which has a double meaning today.

@StillIRise1963 Apparently so. Being forced to work in a field all day definitely feels like the less-free option to me.

@StillIRise1963 Living in the country wasn't the negative in my latter example.

The lack of freedom, back-breaking work hours, and inability to live freely for oneself is the plight that serfs faced. Those lords in the castles owned all the land by "divine right". They "graciously allowed" the serfs to work those fields, but in effect, they basically owned their laborers. Few were literate and the conditions were abysmal.

Who wouldn't kiss a little ass if it meant getting their kids out of such a system?

@StillIRise1963 So the choice is between living in a castle and feasting and participating in revelry vs living in a hovel, working in a field all day, and eating gruel?

Yeah, I think I'd kiss some ass too.

I wonder if the Gadsen flag would be so popular among the nationalist right if the phrase was "Don't tread on anyone". Not only does that better represent true American values, but it rolls off the tongue better.

@interfluidity I mean, some jobs are literally economically worth 100x others. I.e. I work in computer automation. I can easily automate away 100 tedious data-entry jobs all by myself.

I also think it's reasonable that someone who is responsible for maintaining hundreds of thousands of jobs (i.e. chairpeople of huge companies) be paid significantly better than someone who's providing unskilled labor to that same company... and I think that ratio is more than 10:1.

@interfluidity I think 100x probably makes a little more sense, while still achieving the same goals.

I've been an advocate of the 100x rule for years now.

Wow.

Authorities say #Russia Wagner Group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list of a business jet which has crashed, killing 10.

@cathygellis Yep, I'm the same way. I specifically stopped ordering takeout sushi at one place when their website suddenly removed the option for guest checkout.

@AmericanScream True, but by that same token, should Muslims in prison be forced to eat pork or go hungry? Best not to open that can of worms at all, I think. Just protect everyone's rights equally.

@jessicablaze @johnettesnuggs @mentallyalex Agreed, although in theory, if they coded it right, you shouldn't have to let go. You should just be able to tap your phone against their device and then they'd read it from there, without you ever letting go of your phone, like digital payments. Not sure if that's how it actually works though.

@trinsec Oh that's right, WASD wasn't a difficult adjustment, but the zooming was. It's like ctrl + mouse move or something? Way better with a scrollwheel.

@SallyStrange Strongly disagree. Anyone can defend speech they agree with; that's easy. The whole point of using Nazis as the example is that you don't truly believe in free speech unless you also defend the free speech rights of those who say things you find abhorrent. If free speech doesn't apply to everyone equally, then it's not truly free.

Even the ACLU has defended Nazis in court on free speech grounds.
