@gpowerf Social media is just a mechanism.
When did we conquer our letter-writing addiction? When the phone was popularized.
When did we conquer our phone addiction? When texting came about.
Humans aren't addicted to social media; they're addicted to being social. Social media just gives us a relatively safe space to quell those social desires with groups more like-minded than could be easily found offline.
So, to answer your question, we'll get over our social media addiction when the next, more addictive thing comes along... probably a device to allow us to upload our thoughts to the internet in real time with an ML algo to choose which thoughts are post-worthy and which thoughts go straight to the ad network for "more relevant content".
@livingcoder
Yes, agreed, it would require retraining models, but that's what pretty much any tweak requires of this tech.
In theory, they could do it by attaching version codes as tags to the code they're using for training (in many environments, like .NET, they could scrape that data pretty easy from the project files). Then, when the plugin is used, it would detect the versions of the users included libraries and apply a weight based on the similarity of version number.
That wouldn't stop it from suggesting such things entirely, but it should help.
@nsarwark Two big differences, however:
(1) Crypto advertises itself as both a currency *and* an investment.
(2) Crypto is a net negative on our economy, eating endless electricity, a tangible commodity, for no real gains.
This morning, when I flew over a lake at 8 in the morning, I saw a motorboat in a lake doing circles.
On my next pass over the lake, I took a closer look... it was pulling an innertube with a guy on it.
I know this is #Florida and all, but 8AM is still pretty early to get that drunk.
This afternoon's task? Clouds!
It's far from perfect, but I'm pretty happy with the results so far.
The feel of the game is really starting to come together.
@essie_is_okay I've been using Tusky as my primary mobile app for Mastodon. I agree with your color issues; the blue of links/hashtags is really difficult for me to read. But otherwise the app seems solid for the nearly-year I've been using it so far.
@wndlb Would be if you didn't need to remove the floor of the trunk to get at it. That would be pretty hard while trapped inside, lol.
@ArenaCops I don't believe the 15th has anything to do with this. The map didn't prevent anyone from voting. It was struck down on state constitutional grounds.
More importantly, "punishing" elected officials for their choices is generally not the job of the courts; it's the job of the electorate. We're responsible for voting out politicians who seek to abuse their power.
@ArenaCops Pretty sure the map hasn't actually been used yet, so yes, preventing it from being used is all the courts can do.
We'd really be screwed if it wasn't for federal courts consistently slapping the shit out of #DeSantis.
In this one, they tell him his map is way too racist and he needs to redraw it.
In 2021, Washington State passed a 7% capital gains tax on the rich.
To date, that tax has raised over $850 million dollars — three times what it was supposed to.
Amazon is still here.
Microsoft is still here.
Boeing is still here.
The wealthy are doing just fine. Anyone who tells you we can't tax "job creators" is lying to you.
If someone you knew had a partner who was prohibiting them from making their own decisions, threatening them and anyone who helps them for going against their wishes, and physically preventing them from leaving, you would probably be extremely concerned.
This is literally what Republicans are doing to women in red states.
They are codifying abuse.
@jeffjarvis “It is ironic that newspaper publishers would decry AI reading and learning from their text when journalists themselves read, learn from, rewrite, and repurpose each others’ work in their publications every day. They do the same with sources and experts, without remuneration and often without credit. This is the time-honored tradition in the field.” 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
