@freemo Except Terra isn't backed by anything and hasn't actually remained pegged to the dollar. Plus, it's explicitly linked to Luna, which was, for all intents and purposes, an investment coin. The SEC went after them specifically for "misleading and deceiving investors". The guy who created it is on the run from Interpol.
Your example proves my point.
@freemo Yeah, I understand the difference; that's why I asked for a law *or* regulation.
As I understand it, those rulings do not apply to all cryptocurrencies. They apply to crypto tokens *sold as investments*. In other words, they were sold to customers with the promise the value will rise, and it's that advertising that ultimately got them in trouble.
A cryptocurrency that exists for stability (or at least doesn't actively advertise itself as existing for the sole purpose of going up in value) would not be beholden to such rules.
That all makes good sense to me. It's how it should work, and wouldn't prohibit using crypto for legitimate purposes.
@freemo Can you cite an actual law or regulation that does this?
@freemo What? Such as?
@freemo I acknowledge there are legitimate uses, but they make up like 1% of the crypto industry. It's demonstrably dominated by scam artists because the very nature of the industry (decentralized, unregulated, no take-backs) is extremely conducive to fraud.
And there does seem to me to be a very strong correlation between companies that operate less-than-honestly and companies that integrate crypto into their products/services.
@ned Idk, back then you could buy a house for that much money... so I'd say that's a pretty big difference in inferred meaning.
If an 150K worker strike causes $5.6 billion hit to the economy, that's ~$37K per worker.
For 10 days.
Maybe they should get a raise.

Once again, affiliation with #cryptocurrencies is a tell that a company is shady as hell. The pattern just keeps repeating.
@ken @ProPublica It may not pay like big tech, but that's a respectable salary for the position.
Any idea if they're open to part-time contractors? I'm an ex-CTO who provides similar services to other companies on a part-time basis as a consultant/contractor.
@dangoodin I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories but that sounds an awful lot like a cover story for Occam's Razor: it was an inside job. All of those things could be explained by the member of the IT team working against the company, and AI spoofing is a hot-button topic that would make a good cover story...
@auldlangsin That's not unreasonable, but why do you assume that your protocol is better or more right than the older generation's? Why should we get to decide the protocol instead of them? Hell, they were the ones who invented email in the first place.
@LouisIngenthron In 303 Creative, you had one religious woman who entirely owned and ran an LLC. She claimed her free expression rights were violated, both in behalf of the LLC and herself. SCOTUS drew no distinction between the two and held both the LLC's rights and the woman's rights were violated. Now we have a huge publicly traded corporation saying it has the same free speech rights as a single member LLC and nothing in SCOTUS precedent explains how or whether you distinguish.
@annmlipton Ahhhhh, gotcha, that makes sense. Thanks.
@annmlipton I don't understand the connection you're drawing... can you please expound?
@auldlangsin Uh, no, they established the protocol with letters and we decided to break it just because our letters are sent electronically. So if you're annoyed with anyone "breaking protocol", it should be yourself.
@fisunov Then it would be election season 24/7. Screw that. We need the stability of longer terms.
@argv_minus_one It's mainly because FOSS can't replicate the asset store. That provided templates and assets that new folks used to easily learn and assemble larger games. But it was driven by money and you just can't have that in the FOSS ecosystem. So, instead, there's just friction, and that turns people off.
Don't get me wrong, Godot is a solid engine. I like a lot of what it does, and I've been donating to their fund since it was announced in July. But it doesn't hold a candle to the frictionless ease of creating games in Unity, even with several years of enshittification crust.
