Discussion of violence

@tripu I think part of the problem is that, in our society, we consider murder to be a crime that can be committed against anyone... But rape is a crime committed only against the vulnerable (not in reality, but in perception). And it's that element of taking advantage of the vulnerable that makes it especially heinous.

One benefit of working from home that isn't talked about enough is how your faith in humanity grows back the less you have to interact with humans on a day-to-day basis.

Discussion of violence

@tripu To a degree, the victim matters. Murder of a child *is* typically depicted as being just as heinous as pedophilia.
But depicting the murder of a soldier or a criminal is more acceptable, because that's the job they signed up for.

I think the other issue is that while most people would view depictions of rape or pedophilia with an appropriate reaction (horror), there are those who might seek it out for arousal purposes, and nobody wants to create porn for those people. You don't really have that issue with a gun battle in an action movie.

I have no idea who originally made this graphic, but whoever you are, you are a genius.

WTF? The USPTO charges a $400 fee for *not* using Microsoft's proprietary DOCX format? That's fucked.

Fox News is many things, but it seems to me that, above all, it's grievance reception for a particular kind of insecure adult over 50 who is embarrassingly mourning the loss of a future that openly doesn't want them and failing in an attempt to pretend they're not bothered by it.

Please, please, pleas go through with it. This would be the final death knell of twitter and then I'd get to stop reading about Musk and "the birdsite".

@lednabwm Maybe... or it could be the lefty version of the tactic the right uses to try to try to normalize their fringe. An example of a motte & bailey argument.

@john If their intent is to strike fear into those they're protesting, then they most certainly are terrorists.

And there are exceedingly few reasons to open-carry other than intimidation.

@john I participated in the BLM protests. We were a massive crowd of people in t-shirts surrounded by cops in full body armor, with long arms, mounted on horseback.

I am extremely certain that open-carrying would have made the situation worse in every way, and likely would have been rejected by the very people I was marching with.

@ryo That's cool. Go ahead and boycott the indies just trying to get by and instead spend your money on the major studios that can afford to hire labor at slave wages to build internal engines.

@ryo They did choose wisely... years before Unity made this announcement.

Sorry if we can't see into the future sufficiently to earn your business.

@ryo 99% of business plans rely on services from other businesses. Nobody can do everything themselves, and your demand that they do is unrealistic and misinformed.

@ryo You're demanding that indie studios redo years and hundreds of thousands of dollars of work because of a decision someone else made. And you're describing it as "take a bit longer". That's either dishonest or grossly ignorant.

I'm guessing it's the latter, because *most* businesses operate dependent on other businesses. Retail stores are dependent on landlords. Websites are dependent on server hosts. Product manufacturers are dependent on logistics companies and retailers. That's just how business works. Do you think I should also not "make myself a slave" to Steam and try to sell the game myself? Because I'd be homeless if I did that.

Your proposed solutions are uninformed and impractical. And your desire to further hurt the people who are already most hurt by Unity's decision is just cruel and arbitrary.

@ryo Lol "Port, make new software" you say, as if it's so easy. 😆 🤦‍♂️

Those things take *years*. Most developers don't have the budget for being screwed over by their engine. And you want to exacerbate the problem by boycotting the victims.
