@NPR No, it means "don't describe your platform as open while working in the shadows to keep it closed"
Ugh, I hate it when people use good causes to chase clout.
@web3isgreat Lol, my first assumption would have been AI-generated, but they're actually too low-quality.
@freemo That's a good point, but it seems like a natural consequence of the necessary complexity. I.e. if you want a self-defense exception to murder laws, then you need to clearly define self-defense. Then you need to figure out when it doesn't apply (i.e. if you're a burglar, are you "defending" yourself from the homeowner?).
The cascading tree of dependencies is where the walls of text come from that are a big component in making laws unreadable.
@freemo C'mon, you're a programmer, you know better. When you make the instructions that simple, you end up with egregious edge cases.
@ThinkingSapien You've got a 12% chance of making them very excited.
Given how most Americans can't afford a lawyer and how those Americans who can afford a lawyer use said lawyer to abuse the legal system to their gain...
Let's just stop and take a moment and realize how amazing it is that this country has a longstanding public defender system.
Is it perfect? No, of course not. But imagine how fucked we'd be without it.
@mathowie Wait, "looking up breaking news on YouTube" is a thing people do?
@arisummerland @MHowell @mentallyalex See, I don't even think of passenger jets as being a net negative for the environment. Quite the opposite. They're a form of public transport that encourages us to gather together to save gas. Not great from an epidemiological standpoint, but a net positive for the environment.
Private jets, otoh...
@MHowell @mentallyalex @arisummerland Three hours is the flight time plus layover.
Even when you add all the extras you describe, though, air travel is still half the time of traveling by car and 1/9th the time of train travel.
@mentallyalex @arisummerland 100% agreed.
I make an annual trip back home for the holidays.
By plane: 850 miles / 3 hours
By car: 1,050 miles / 14 hours
By train: 1,850 / *54* hours
Gee, I wonder why I've never tried that third option?
@JoshuaHolland Right, and also, isn't this basically Biden throwing his own Justice Department under a gigantic bus?
Biden now has a choice.
He can either denounce this warmongering...
Or he can play the part of Netanyahu's puppet.
@GreenFire Not legally. A private school is a private school.
Ben Thompson gives a detailed breakdown of the sentiment I shared yesterday that Google lost the Epic case by pretending to be open.
Apple is up front that they are a closed platform. Consumers and developers know this when they choose iOS.
Google markets Android as an open platform to consumers and developers but then uses OEM contracts and constantly changing rules to effectively make Google Play and its in-app billing as the only effective choices.
So they lost.
@GreenFire Right... at public universities.
Private colleges aren't beholden to the same rules. Which is why Christian colleges can restrict pro-choice and pro-LGBTQ rhetoric.
@GreenFire Well, they're not. Those same codes of conduct you cited above tend to specify which speech the student cannot exercise on campus, even if such speech would otherwise be protected under 1A in public.
I.e. most colleges prohibit hate speech on their property, despite such speech being protected under 1A.
@GreenFire Correct, that's a private agreement that can be enforced civilly, not a constitutional right enforced by the government.
