@johnmark Blocking because of the availability of a tool seems silly.
Blocking because of unmoderated abuse of that tool would be far more justified.
There are lots of legitimate uses for QTs, even if there are some folks who used them for harm.
@mmasnick Interesting. Yeah, I probably won't use it that much if the embedding doesn't work on other instances.
Not tagging the author of the quoted post also seems problematic...
This is how it looks for me:
Let's find out.
@mmasnick Interesting. So, yeah, I guess it's a server-specific feature. Your server doesn't have the quote feature like mine, though.
@annmlipton Yep. Although I do wish likes would bubble up the best replies like they do on Twitter. That was helpful to identify the best conversations below popular tweets. I have no idea what order replies are on this system (they don't always appear to be chronological).
@mmasnick You can edit your posts? Huh, my server must not offer that yet.
@annmlipton Right? Especially those of us who used Latest Tweets with an adblocker. Mastodon feels just like home.
@simon Oh, I understand that. But what I'm saying is, when enough people migrate from Twitter, the trolls will have incentive to come to these non-trolly servers and push the moderators to their limits. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out.
@simon Give it time. The trolls go where the people go. Once it reaches critical mass, human nature will take over.
Local business has a sign up saying they're offering limited service "until people want to work again."
They have no job postings up online.
That seems like an especially seedy way of saying "we refuse to pay a living wage and we're bitter that people want one".
It's really too bad, because this was a beloved local family-owned joint.
@Extra_Special_Carbon Yes, it appears so.
@mfitzp Correct, I am referring to what exists on Twitter as "quote-retweeting". My server appears to support that as custom extra functionality. I have a separate button for quoting. I just tried it. Check out my profile to see the result.
@dawnwolfe @themaltesemama Ah, yeah, it's probably skin-dependent.
@themaltesemama There should be a series of icons at the bottom of the composition text area for new posts (like to add an attachment or poll). One of those icons is "CW". Use that to add a content warning.
@Extra_Special_Carbon Just pretend Mastodon instances (servers) are email providers.
Just because you sign up with an address at Gmail now doesn't mean you can't switch over to Yahoo later if they start offering better features.
