"they are making the decision to not see on behalf of others"
I disagree with this characterization. Those folks chose to join those servers. Sure, most likely, when they joined, they were ignorant of the blocking policy. But they can always learn about it and move.
Some people may want to live in gardens with arbitrary walls defined by others. 🤷‍♂️ Who are we to stop them?

@freemo @derickflorian @toxomat @ceoln @PaulaToThePeople @SecondJon @shelenn To an extent, yes.

But I believe that (even in a more general sense), we ascribe too much blame to the liars and too little blame to those who uncritically believe lies. The latter create the demand that affords the former their living.

We, as a species, easily fall prey to confirmation bias. Those who refuse to fight it with critical thinking are absconding their duty to their community.

@derickflorian @freemo @toxomat @ceoln @PaulaToThePeople @SecondJon @shelenn Eh, I'm of the mind that there's no reason to get upset about it. QOTO doesn't block servers, so the servers decided to block themselves. It's self-selected curation. Anyone who wants their eyes shielded by another for arbitrary reasons is probably not the kind of curious, inquisitive person that I prefer interacting with on social media anyway.
All one can do is try to publicize the fiasco so that those who are curious can leave the draconian servers and come to the light of reason and open discussion.

@WorMP3 Maybe better to say "Freedom of speech *restricts* government only"....😬

@wiseguyeddie Really? I mean, I'm not a big fan of the name calling in the first place, but if you're going to do it, why would you use "KKKonye" when "Klanye" was *right there*?

So here's the thing. You can only violate people's legal rights and your own word so far before they lawyer up and come after you.

I really do hope Musk changes his mind and does the right thing - the employees deserve that. But it'll be fun as hell if he doesn't.

This is quite an opening letter from @AkivaMCohen to Elon telling him to pay up the severance he owes employees. twitter.com/AkivaMCohen/status

I don't think I will ever, in my entire life, overestimate the amount of time it takes pasta to boil.

@clackable@mstdn.social @alexwinter Between seventeen feet of snow, rampant wildfires, electric grid failures, and your emergency services failing to communicate outside of Twitter, it sounds like California really is going to hell...

And I thought Florida was bad for going red.

Good luck, man. Sounds like you're due for a devastating earthquake soon. At least you'll be on Twitter to hear about it.

@clackable@mstdn.social @alexwinter I live in hurricane country, so yes, I know about disasters.

Yet, I still get my news about such things from the NWS website, or from my local county website. For both entities, Twitter posts are usually just a brief summary with a link to these websites for details. Plus, for severe alerts, the local government sends emergency broadcasts to my phone.

If your local elected officials are updating Twitter before their own websites or emergency alert infrastructure, you need to elect new officials.

@geoff_green @mmasnick That's what I was thinking too. Since they scan the IDs now, that would be a pretty trivial lookup if they could get the airlines to feed their ticket data into the same place.

I'm not really a big de-platforming guy but Kanye definitely clears the hurdle for me. If you want to make anti-semitism and defending the Nazis your thing, you should be run out of polite society.

@clackable@mstdn.social @alexwinter Wait, do you think those groups only communicate via Twitter?

I mean, I don't live in California, maybe it's more messed up than I realized, but I'd be willing to bet you could access news and info from all of those government organizations without using Twitter at all.

@alexwinter Seems to me that "pervasive criticism that departing Twitter 2.0 is an act of privilege" is really just a stand-in for "I'm too lazy/locked-in to move so the rest of you need to keep providing content for me here".

Which would make *staying* the act of privilege.

I truly don’t agree with the pervasive criticism that departing Twitter 2.0 is an act of privilege. Under the new management it immediately became a shoddy, unsafe platform. At the very least, who wants to continue using a crappy product when there are perfectly good ones elsewhere? I understand people who feel they *have* to remain for whatever reason, but it’s hardly privilege to abandon a sinking, junker of a ship.

Birdsite / American Dysfunction

Just incredible how Musk blatantly lies and there will be zero consequences for it. Journalists will keep dutifully writing up what he says as fact, banks will keep pouring money into his various ventures, regulators will keep letting him skate by.
