@greg Do you really think the AI, that runs on their servers, is able to provide suggestions relevant to your code base without the plugin uploading any code to them?

@greg Because I work in large codebases and it would violate my clients' privacy to allow CodeGPT to upload those to OpenAI.

Also it would be deeply unprofessional to pass off low-quality AI-driven code as my own.

I'll use AI to speed up my work. Not to create it whole cloth.

@greg In languages I know, I have the requisite experience to make those determinations, yes.

@greg How can you know if the provided solutions are useful if you don't know how the language works? That sounds like a recipe for, just as an example, C++ code riddled with memory leaks.

Knowing a language is about more than just syntax; each language has its own paradigms and pitfalls to look out for.

Delivering code written by an AI in a language you don't know to a client for money feels deeply unprofessional to me.

@greg Certainly not, because I only advertise my services for languages I already have experience in.

If you don't know the language you're programming in and you're just prompting an AI and publishing, then why couldn't your client cut you out and just prompt the AI to do what they want themselves? If you, by your own admission, don't know the language, then you're not really adding much to that equation, are you?

@greg That's not a real-world example though. Clients don't typically ask for CS1 homework assignments; they want bugs in their codebases fixed or middleware written to connect proprietary APIs. None of which can be assisted by remote AI services without compromising client privacy.

@greg The AI runs on the provider's server, does it not? How could it possibly provide suggestions without it uploading the code to the provider's server for analysis?

@greg I use copilot, but I refuse to use CodeGPT since that would essentially upload my clients' confidential code to the ether.

Copilot's not bad, but it's only right about half the time.

On a related note, I fucking *hate* companies that demand my phone number when they don't really need it.

*sigh* guess it's finally time to set up an OpenAI account.

2. The First Amendment does not allow government officials to remove books because there are LGBTQ characters or candid discussions of racism

So many of these actions are being successfully challenged in court

@hakan_geijer "No reasonable person believes that a Twitter clone just for conservatives is a viable business any more."

This has been true since before Parler was founded.

Today's PSA: (because, apparently, this is shocking to people). It's OK for corporations to make less money. It's OK for shareholders to receive less value.

No, they don't have to raise prices on their consumers. No, they don't have to cut wages or benefits. They're choosing to.

If your perpetually ascending profit model only works because you exploit your labor, then your profit model deserves no sympathy, fretting, or hand-wringing.

You can, and should, make less profit.

YouTube just translated a British actress saying "what you want?" as "fudgy womp" and I'm dying 😂

A wise man I know gave my daughter advice as she moved up into middle school and started getting involved in student government.

He told Ruth, “There are two kinds of people who get involved in politics: people who want to be someone and people who want to do something. Always seek a position in order to accomplish a goal, rather than to to gain a title.”

We should all take his advice to heart.

300 lines in, I have found the beginning of the class for which the code file is named.

@jeffcliff @interfluidity Those are also terms I've never heard before, lol.

Are you entirely sure someone hasn't scammed you by teaching you fake slang? 😂
