@marius_gs @shoq Property insurance is crazy expensive in Florida despite the fact that insurance companies are losing crazy amounts of money (or just outright going bankrupt or leaving the state) and DeSantis has been widely criticized for doing absolutely nothing about it.

In my case, when I bought my home, I could only find one company who would even write an insurance policy, and it's gone up by several hundred dollars each year since.

I do believe we've finally reached that inflection point from which there is no turning back. You know the one. We've been talking about it for decades and it has finally come:

The plastic wrappers around plastic utensils are now stronger than the utensils themselves.

@charlotteclymer Meanwhile, a silicon valley stabbing murder, an issue used by right-wing actors to try to persecute homeless people, now appears to have been committed by a tech executive.

@jeffcliff @interfluidity Sometimes it's more important to make sure access is restricted to the right people than it is to make information easy to access. Military state secrets would almost certainly qualify for that category.

Also, wtf does "pro-ben" mean?

@shoq @Teri_Kanefield Wow. It's especially insane to listen to them complain over and over about the entire country calling them racists with absolutely zero self-awareness or reflection about why that might be happening. They really have drunk their own kool-aid.

@marius_gs @shoq I think he probably considered that option, then realized it might help fix the property insurance crisis and quickly aborted.

@lednabm @tc_morekindness @JaneETowle @shoq You might be surprised in which states that's allowed. Hint: 2/3 of the west coast.

In deep red states like Texas and Louisiana, the minimum is 16, but even that requires a lot of hoops to be jumped through (like emancipation and judicial approval).

To the best of my knowledge, in no state in the US can you get married under the age of 15 without special dispensation from the judicial system.

@interfluidity If experience on the private side of IT has taught me anything, it's that users will sacrifice security for convenience every damn time.

Sometimes IT can push back. When the user is a non-tech-savvy general who doesn't want to jump through hoops to get critical information to his subordinates securely, though, I can easily see how shit like this would happen.

@tc_morekindness @lednabm @shoq They do. But, especially in Florida, the geezers outnumber them, especially after gerrymanders.

@lednabm @shoq That sounds like a solid plan, since damage to the earth's climate stops at state lines. /s

But, really, what we need is for young liberals to move here to offset the dying right-wing geezers and vote for better industrial regulation.

@w7voa In other words, a framework to ensure only the biggest companies that have fully-staffed regulatory compliance departments will be able to take advantage of AI.

Here is a must-read post from children's author Maggie Tokuda-Hall on how Scholastic offered to publish her book — all she had to do was remove all mention of racism.

Sure, they're banning books in Tennessee and Texas. But it's not just the books that get published and then banned from the library. It's all the books that don't get published in the first place.

Those banning books know publishers like Scholastic pull this cowardly bullshit. It's their game plan.

The current #TechnicallyAChallenge theme is "Tea" so I tried to simulate the swirling patterns when adding milk to tea (very common in the UK) ☕️

Decided to quit caffeine and discovered something very interesting without it: Did you know that every single person is extremely irritating?

@shoq Wow. Meanwhile, just an hour or two north, we've only gotten drizzles for weeks.

@josephbodnar Doesn't surprise me at all. Intelligence going after those with secrets while they're recreating is as old as time. Online video games just mean the spies can do that without leaving their couch.

@chancerydaily Wait, so because three women in a month had complications due to , "these doctors have had to devote significant time and resources to caring for
women"... which is apparently a "concrete harm" to THE DOCTORS according to the law?!?
