@mjf_pro How is Twitter an "obstacle to autocrats' efforts towards consolidating their rule"? Much less the "most significant" one?
Real autocrats can just turn off access to social media or censor it directly. Buying it would be an extremely circuitous and pointlessly expensive way to achieve those goals.
@mattmaison Losing tens of billions of dollars just to write off a few million doesn't make any kind of sense.
@noplasticshower Tax write-offs are great when they're based on simulated losses.
But when they're based on real losses, they hurt.
@cdnveggie So what do you do when it rains?
@trinsec I've found that setup especially difficult for Rimworld. Panning effortlessly with the middle mouse button is essential.
@dameoutlaw@mstdn.social @fasol That appears to support my argument, does it not?
Florida Homeowner's Insurance - Wall of text
Last year, when the hurricane hit, I had minor damage to the roof of my back porch. I reported it to my insurance company. Apparently this was a big mistake.
They sent out an inspector who determined that I had extensive roofing damage that I couldn't see (my main roof looks fine to me). The total amount of the claim, to be filed in December, was about $800 more than my $10K-something deductible. They then demanded that I use their preferred contractor and pay up that five-figure deductible so they could begin work.
I called to decline coverage, because I didn't want to pay $10K for damage that I wasn't convinced was even there. So their lawyer called me up and offered to settle the claim by sending me a check for the $800 over my deductible so I could use that to get the minor damage fixed myself and they could close the claim. I accepted that offer.
However, today, many months later, I get another letter informing me that if I don't submit proof to them that I fixed the damage to my roof that I still don't think exists, then they may stop covering my entire roof. Worse, it has to be performed by a licensed contractor, but the licensing system in Florida is fucked, so there are only a few licensed contractors in my entire city and they charge 10x what non-licensed contractors do (it's a racket).
So now, because I reported minor damage to one tiny section of my roof from a storm, I have the choice of either spending at least ten thousand dollars to replace my entire roof out of my own pocket, or lose my insurance, and potentially, my mortgage.
And this is on top of my insurance rates increasing by over a thousand dollars every year since I got it.
I would be right now, in every way, better off if I wasn't required to have insurance at all. And my story is far from the worst that you can read in Florida.
@JRBuckley Disagree. They reflect the bias of their training models, which often themselves reflect the bias of society.
They aren't a threat. They're a mirror.
@paninid It didn't "come" from Saudi Arabia. They already owned that chunk of Twitter and just rolled it over during the acquisition.
A vast conspiracy to stifle speech is most definitely not the simplest solution. The rich guy being an idiot is a much simpler solution.
@paninid I'm not saying it's totally implausible, but his ex-wife urging him to fight woke-ism still doesn't come close to making it the simplest solution.
@paninid That's... way too complicated to be the razor of the situation. Occam's Razor says Musk is just a flailing idiot running purely on ego.
@fasol I don't believe that's entirely accurate. SA already owned a big chunk of Twitter prior to the Musk buyout and their shares just rolled over. I don't think they helped him finance his portion of the takeover, or bought more during the transition.
@Sheril That's like asking if Trump was really trying to expose the corruption in the GOP or if Martin Shkreli was trying to burst the pharma bubble.
The answer is "no". They're all really *that stupid* and we need to stop giving them this benefit of the doubt just because they're rich.
@jimbob @BigMcLargeHuge How the fuck did you without realizing minimum speed limits are a thing? In my state, it's illegal to drive at "such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic". If such laws were enforced equally, we wouldn't have this problem.
@interfluidity In my experience, it very much depends on who is hosting the meeting and how much they care.
@slightlyoff Wait, so they're encrypting their plain text content and then using Javascript to decrypt it client-side to prevent html scrapers from easily accessing the text?
