Discussion of response to mass shootings

The whole "[city name] strong" thing that happens after every mass shooting pisses me off.

I get that it's supposed to be a symbol of solidarity, but its mad-lib nature and commanding tone just sound more like a crass and hollow demand for people to shut up and cope.

The fact that every city just slaps their name onto the same brand formula just reinforces that notion.

@suetanvil @Daojoan Eh, it's definitely more than a fad (I can hardly imagine working without it at this point), but it is a square peg that's currently being stuffed into a bunch of round holes.

@Bam Nah, that's been happening at every thanksgiving table since history began.

These days we just have the internet which enables us to call them on their crap.

@kegill Yep, most of us do, which is why automatic weapons require very advanced permitting for civilians to acquire.

But many responsible gun owners are opposed to bans based on arbitrary shape or model restrictions, because they're a difficult-to-enforce waste of time.

The better way to tackle gun control, that you can get moderates and even gun owners to sign on to, is not keeping guns out of law-abiding hands, but rather making sure they don't fall into the wrong hands. Universal background checks and red flag laws should be the focus instead of the more-polarizing and less-effective bans.

@w7voa In other words, somebody didn't check the NOTAMs and is gonna end up paying a fine for their mistake.

@admitsWrongIfProven Well, sure, but you can replace the X in "we should not be X 24/7" with just about anything and that sentence still holds true.

Even objectively good things, like exercise or charitable giving, become bad without moderation.

@tripu @admitsWrongIfProven Nonsense. Nobody can bear the weight of the world on their shoulders 24/7. We all need distractions from time to time.

@kegill You might be surprised how many folks left of the aisle are packing too.

@elduvelle @jcriecke According to a Forbes article quoting the company, it "will only affect tracks that generate less than 5 cents per month", which, yeah, makes total sense.

Anyone boycotting for this reason definitely needs to boycott Steam as well, because they have a $100/month minimum.

Threads was supposed to federate, right? Did that ever happen? Can we follow folks on Threads from here yet?

@Lats @daveunderwood No. Major publications have been controlled by the few for as long as this country has existed. That doesn't stop the many from speaking out against them.

@JoshuaHolland Makes you wonder how many of these would be quiet suicides if taking a bunch of innocent lives with them wasn't incentivized by having their name broadcast to millions.

@bruce Fwiw, it showed a popup when that update was installed on mine. That allowed me to go to the settings with a single click and disable them.

@datn Does the animation bother you at all in the full series? The one-frame-per-second trailer was really off-putting to me.

@w7voa When does a single man blowing his own fortune with stupid decisions stop being news?

Ugh. just released an update that made the text smaller, more cramped, and lower contrast. In other words, less usable.

I don't want to live forever.

I just want to have enough time to tidy up a bit before I die.
