@kegill Seems like, yeah. In human history we always have two steps forwards for civil rights followed by one step back of dealing with angry and out-of-touch white people.
@jackiegardina @hughfmurrayiii Yeah, but the alternative is prior restraint on political speech, which is easily abused and far more dangerous.
More importantly: we're in the information age. Even if they wanted to prevent it, and had an objective framework for doing so, how could they? They can't hardly enforce the CAN-SPAM act or stop robocallers or prevent revenge porn.
The only reasonable answer we're left with is using the limited resources available to hold the most egregious violators to account (like SBF or Trump) as a warning to the others.
And when it comes to politicians, we have an even more powerful weapon: our vote.
I truly believe that the best answer to bad speech is not to try to silence the bad speech, but rather to drown it out with good speech.
@luis_in_brief Nope, sorry. Afaik, it's just too late at this point.
@jackiegardina @hughfmurrayiii We basically already have. That's a big part of what Trump is being tried for right now in Georgia.
It's just a high bar for a prosecutor to clear, as it should be. If it wasn't, then a politically-motivated bad actor would be able to far more adversely affect an election by wielding the force of law to punish a candidate for totally normal hyperbolic speech (i.e. "my opponent is a crook").
@supaspoida @danilo Or how about the climate costs of endlessly storing spam emails?
@supaspoida @danilo Fortnite has about 4 million players on average at any given time. When you consider the servers necessary to host those games on top of the computers and GPUs playing the clients, it's pretty significant.
@jackiegardina @hughfmurrayiii Yeah, but those book bans are getting shot down by federal courts left and right... because of the 1st Amendment.
What would you consider changing?
@supaspoida @danilo I agree on crypto (the proof of work was the point), but not for AI. Mainly because everyone's working to reduce the costs of AI, but also because it's actually doing legitimate work with those resources, providing a service.
If AI is "creating demand" for more computation power, then so is Fortnite and Netflix.
@Paulos_the_fog @johnabs As for keeping firearms securely locked when not in use, I agree with you, as would most law-abiding gun owners who keep them locked in safes already.
The problem is that even if you make that rule a law, it's also the kind of thing that typically only gets enforced after-the-fact.
@Paulos_the_fog @johnabs Most Americans don't have a license to own firearms either.
If by "license" you mean "legal right", however, then you should know that the following countries allow legal private ownership of longarms, especially for hunting purposes: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Ukraine, UK.
Which you might recognize as *pretty much all of them*.
Just look at this helpful map from Wikipedia. See how pretty much none of the "western societies" are red?
(Also, see how silly it was for you to limit your argument to western societies? You actually would have had a stronger argument by including the eastern ones too)
@Daojoan Sounds like a description of my industry too.
SCOTUS declines an emergency request to reinstate Florida's law making it illegal to admit children to drag shows. Justices Thomas, Alito and Gorsuch dissented. https://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/griffin-v-hm-florida-orl/
@riana I'm not a lawyer, but in theory, 230 would protect them from being liable for user submissions only. They could still be held liable for any illegal content in their solicitations or if the design of the system itself is intended to, and used to, subvert the law.
@ThinkingSapien @HopelessDemigod Just have to translate that into business speak:
"We need to prioritize cross-training to limit liability and leverage our workforce so we can minimize downtime and decrease our long-term support costs without an accompanying increase in development payroll."
@ThinkingSapien @HopelessDemigod Yeah, it's a lot easier to blame them for incompetence when you don't see the incompetent systems they have to use or the grossly incompetent executives they answer to.
