@RickiTarr Maybe Vietnamese spring rolls? Although I think that's usually rice noodles.

@peterdrake Yeah, I think that's because it includes all the loading time as the first frame's delta time and that borks a lot of subsystems.

Having an asynchronous loading screen also solves it pretty gracefully.

@morecowbell No, it's not. If murder was legal, you'd still be free to move and associate. It would just be more dangerous. You seem to be confusing "safety" with "freedom". These are two separate concepts.

More importantly, I want to know who the genocide advocates are so I can disassociate from them and shun them. If the government keeps them silent, then they'll be a hidden rot on our society, and I won't be able to make informed decisions about my associations.

@annmlipton That seems... backwards. In my experience, an IPO signifies the point in time in which a company stops caring about the long-term to instead seek only immediate short-term wins for their new shareholders who can sell at any time.

@morecowbell There is no "right to murder", but if it were not illegal, then you would absolutely have "freedom to murder".

There are valid claims you can make about outlawing murder or genocidal speech, but "more free" is definitely not one of them.

@annmlipton They also think that companies chasing short term profits with no thought about the long term is "implausible"? What world are they living in?

@morecowbell @marcelias You're claiming Germany is freer than us because they restrict more freedoms? ...what?

@carnage4life I'm conflicted...

I don't like it when corporations cut jobs to save their executives' skin.

But I also think the world needs fewer marketers.

@Adam_Cadmon1 I think it's a mixture of memory and imagination, just like dreams.

I suspect that we "see" them by our brains simulating the signals of sight that normally come from our eyes, in effect rendering the images for us. The fact that we can see these images more vividly when we close our eyes is what leads me to that conclusion.

When you read about how much of what we "see" is really just filled-in-patterns from our brain supplementing blurry shapes from our actual light receptors, it makes sense that our brains can extend that power to things that are currently unseen.

Great piece on the Cybertruck’s design

… which distills every malign trend in US trucks: Massive weight, jacked-up height designed to lethally throw accident victims beneath it, noise baffling so perfect you can’t hear the outside world

Cars are rolling buckets of externalities: They greatly improve the life of their riders, while making the lives of everyone *outside* them worse

The Cybertruck is a tone poem to this impulse: usa.streetsblog.org/2023/12/02

Thank fuck. We need to figure out a system that prevents one jackass from crippling our military.

I really don't understand this. Is it because I'm not on the flagship instance?

I've seen, like, three nazis in more than a year of being on the fediverse and I blocked their *entire server* and then never saw any ever again.

The power of Mastodon's server banhammer, mixed with the good-natured volunteer work of our admins and moderators means that's not a problem here.

But why is it failing for others? I don't want to be on a whites-only social media. How do we make this space more inclusive to people of color when we can't even see the problems they describe?

@jerry I'm cursed to keep explaining this. Black users: There is more anti-Black racism on the Fediverse than on Twitter. I did not expect that. ...

Very much looking forward to my first cybertruck sighting in the wild so I can openly laugh at its owner.

You can't make this shit up. #Texas GOP refuses to disassociate from nazis and antisemitic 💩like Nick Fuentes, who was recently caught visiting a key #GOP operative. Great analysis from @justinmiller @TexasObserver:

Ugh, the lights are not on my side. 4 separate strands of LED christmas lights failed while putting them up. I thought that wasn't supposed to happen with these new LED bulbs?

@carnage4life The bigger problem seems to be that the higher prices aren't attracting enough new competitors to increase the supply.
