I'm sorry if you're of the generation that's never used a dot-matrix printer. I still remember mine from the 80s and 90s, and they were dope AF:

- Made cool sounds when printing

- Paper as a perforated form-feed, and tearing the perforations after printing was *so* satisfying

- You could re-ink your own ribbons with whatever ink you had at hand

- Manufacturer wasn't trying to screw you at every possible term

- Software focused on birthdays cards and banners, not "business" or "out of cyan"

The legal manual I was given to read to get my Florida concealed carry license is *bonkers*. It's full of first person subjective opinions, and reads like a stream-of-thought diatribe from a terrible lawyer. Here are some gems:

"There are some limitations on where you can carrying[sic] concealed. Some of these make good sense, some do not."

"Having a Concealed Weapons License is the smartest thing anyone can do"

"It means you are not criminally liable for driving through a school zone with a firearm!"

"Of course, there are no cases interpreting this facet [...] and therefore, even though I am totally confident in my opinion, if you want to be safe, stick to the weapons listed."

"get arrested because somebody on the government side is too chicken to stand up against possible adverse publicity"

"If you don't think there are forces out there that would love to see you disarmed, and easy prey for everything and everybody -- you better start getting educated, because the battle is raging around you, every single day."

"I would consider an arrest under these circumstances to be unlawful."

"I gotta leave my protection home because some damn Mouse is anti-gun?"

Just a friendly reminder, not all of us have the spoons or mental space to deal with US politics in all its horror (and maybe glory?).

I'm happy to use filters to curate my timeline, but when you get cute with putting asterisks in words you bypass filters. Just write the word, let us protect ourselves.

Because getting cute with partial censoring of words actually causes more harm than pretending to obfuscate a word.

I feel like the fact that Ethel & Julius Rosenberg got the chair for far less than what Donald Trump has done should be a bigger story.

FFS. He literally bragged on tape to journalists about his crimes.

It's insane that this is the level of evidence it takes to indict rich white men in America.

I have to disagree with @maddow - I don't think the indictment of Donald Trump is a new low for American politics.

I believe it is a new HIGH. Donald Trump isn't the first corrupt politician, he's just the first corrupt politician - at his scale - to actually face justice for being so corrupt.

Other countries don't see following the law as a low as we apparently do. I know that wasn't Rachel's point.

But, America prosecuting a white political class for its democracy-hating corruption is a glorious step forward.

What the fuck? has a sponsored ad for a Trump 2020 flag when looking at the listing for a pride flag.

I'm seeing a lot of differing opinions from the Mastodon community about Pat Robertson dying.

While I certainly have no sympathy for the man, I find it absolutely grotesque how many people are going out of their way to celebrate his death.

Relief and indifference are acceptable responses. But if a human being dying elates you, you might be due for some serious introspection, because that seems to me to be the first step down a very dark path.

To dehumanize our enemies is to become them.

New at The Watch:

What if we treated wrongful convictions and bad police shootings the way we treat plane crashes?

I talked to John Hollway of the Quattrone Center about sentinel event reviews, or broad, NTSB-like investigations of criminal justice tragedies.

Today, I survived one in-person meeting, two online meetings, and got through 50+ pages of dense, technical federal regulations.

Let me tell you something: I *earned* this bowl of ice cream.

This took well over a dozen iterations to get it just how I liked it, but the tiny size helped me iterate quickly. Now, though, it's perfect. The LED easily slides right in, the legs lock into their grooves, and the holder snaps easily and securely into the panel it needs to be on. This will make installing the LEDs onto the actual build much easier.

WTF? I bought a lifetime fishing license and now the state is telling me that it will expire and I have to renew it after 200 years. 🙄 What a ripoff.

This has got to be the highest engineering-to-volume thing I've ever worked on. It's a holder for an LED that's meant to easily snap into a dashboard. So, it's got a slot for the LED, slots for its connectors, a retaining ring, and two clips.

All for something that's barely a centimeter across!

My takeaway from this story is that people are flocking to a desert that's running out of water and maybe, just maybe, they shouldn't do that?

ProPublica
Drought-plagued #Nevada pledged to do away with 3,900 acres of grass – roughly 3,000 football fields' worth — in the #LasVegas area within six year...

@inthehands The strangest thing about this is how universally good it is. The benefits for the children (food security) and for the parents (reduced childcare costs & bureaucratic time waste) are obvious, but others benefit too: The administrators have to deal with way less paperwork (they're responsible for verifying status under NSLP), allowing them to focus more on education. And even the businesses who act as food vendors who supply the meals make more money when the government is footing the bill and driving demand.

Literally the only people who could disagree with such a policy are the folks who have so bought into the "welfare queen" scam that they'd shoot themselves in the foot to perpetuate it. (And maybe non-parents whose tax dollars now go to subsidize parents, but you'd have to be a pretty big asshole to get pissed off about your money feeding hungry kids).

Parents just got this email from the school district.

Still marveling at what Democrats in the #MNleg managed to do with a one-vote margin.

One vote.

Not because they had a safety margin. Not because they expect to win again this way.

Because they vowed at the start of the session to leave nothing on the table, and finish with no regrets.
