“Whatever, you know me, I’m easy.” - Moms, lying

Economics: Humans only value things monetarily.
Sociology: Uh, I don't ...
Economics: Humans are always rational and value is calculated by a complex inner calculus.
Sociology: Uh, Psy, can you help?
Psychology: That's not how humans ...

Every police force everywhere will always want to employ facial recognition, backdoor decryption and armed robots. It’s on us as citizens to make sure they don’t get them.

Cruelty to animals, old TV shows

I'm watching Little House on the Prairie (don't ask) and this show goes *waay* harder than I expected it to.

An episode in the second season opens with a nameless man putting a bunch of cute puppies in a sack and throwing it in a river to drown them.

After the attempted puppycide, *this man is never mentioned or seen again*.
The episode isn't about him at all; it was just a brutal metaphor for the later subject matter.

Me trying explaining to to my friends and family why mastodon is so great and why they should all use it:

I've gotten used to 's shockingly good -completion, but it still freaks me out when its comment completion is also shockingly good, sometimes helping me put into words a concept I was struggling to explain.

YOU: I murdered someone.

YOUR DOG: I'm totally cool with that. I love you.

YOU: I murdered someone.

YOUR CAT: Me too.

"Please upgrade to a newer version which has a fix for this."
"Why can't you fix the version we're on?"
"We did. It's called 'the new version'."

Idea: A browser addon that replaces all instances of the word "crosspost" on Mastodon with "compost".

For the youngsters here, the Max Headroom TV hijacking was, I believe, the greatest hack of my lifetime. I hope it’s never solved. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_He

@LouisIngenthron That is an interesting take.. would you want to live under an ideal king, or an abusive democracy...

In the short term I think id prefer to live under an ideal king with generous and proper rights than an abusive democracy... that said this breaks down for me long term. The issue is eventually you have a new king, and he might be quite cruel and then your stuck. A democracy at least can adjust.

I have no idea whether Mastodon/federated services will take off and replace Twitter. If they do, Section 230 will be crucial to their success.

If you want an example of exactly how NOT to do content moderation issues, this is it:

Can we please pass a law that anyone who got their driver's license before the pandemic has to take a road test to keep it?

Because we need it.
