Another fixed wireless sob story: Starry (the ISP, not the new soda) is pulling out of Ohio and will now focus on multi-dwelling units in just five cities: Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, Denver and Washington, DC. Fiber is where it was at, is at, and will be at.

This shows you just how deep Big Telecom's influence goes in Washington, D.C. Industry hacks and revolving door candidates sail through, but consumer advocate Gigi Sohn has to endure a THIRD Senate hearing for FCC commissioner. Outrageous. lightreading.com/broadband/gig

A few months ago, we warned that malevolent people were buying Google ads leading people to fake #GIMP websites to trick them into downloading malware.
Apparently this is still continuing to this day (as were reported to us). Google is still not blocking these fake ads despite the many reports and articles which happened for months now. 😓

Be careful and always make sure where you download your software from. Also the GIMP project doesn't buy ads!

It seems odd to me - watching the shift towards video as the default medium in news stories online.

99% of the time, I don't want to watch a video. I want to read the story. I want the information.

Video is okay in support of the text of the report - but I generally want the text first & foremost. The facts, the data.

When I click a news link - and turns out it is just a video link & no text - I generally bail before the video plays.

Shameful to see the College Board cave to the demands of DeSantis and white supremacists, especially as we kick off Black History Month. Just shameful.

"President Joe Biden informed Congress on Monday that he will end the twin national emergencies for addressing #COVID-19 on May 11.

Once the emergency expires, people with private insurance will have some out-of-pocket costs for vaccines, tests and treatment, while the uninsured will have to pay for those expenses in their entirety."

This is fascism. There is nothing "semi" about it. This is not "normal" political discourse, DeSantis is not a "normal" governor, and the Republican Party is not a "normal" political organization. It is fascism.

(And this is an incomplete list, obviously. Racism, anti-Semitism, cult-like conformity expected from one's political party/organization/etc., contempt for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses - hello, COVID denial -, deep distrust and hatred towards everything associated with what is considered to be "modern," i.e., "politically correct," "woke," etc. It is not subtle at all. This is fascism. And I'm tired of people telling me to overreact.

By the way, I don't say this lightly. I'd also urge people to not expect fascism in the 2020s to look exactly like fascism in the 1920s. There are still shouty marches and uniforms and torches, but that's not all. Think about narratives of decline from former glory, contempt for deliberation/diversity/compromise, ethnic nationalism, authoritarianism, the idea that violence is a cleansing force, misogyny and chauvinism, homophobia and transphobia, and the "strong male leader" shtick. All there.

@TonyStark
> Getting the population who should be allied to split apart is key to maintaining their power.

This is the part I don't really understand. Anyone who is not a wealthy white male racist asshole should be running from the GOP riught now. And yet you hear stories of how, for example, Latinos in some districts are leaning Republican. They would be among the people these rich a-holes would like to deport or enslave (MAYBE they'll let you stay in the USA if you'll clean their toilets for one-fifth of minimum wage, assuming you don't get shot by some mob of right-wing gun-toting extremists) but yet somehow they have been convinced that voting for Republicans is the better choice. What could possibly make them think that is beyond my comprehension!

Ron DeSantis isn't the only one who wants to erase Black history. This is something America has been trying to do since the beginning.

If anything, DeSantis is emblematic of a much larger problem, one that’s not only centered around race but one that concerns the freedoms and civil liberties inherent to any given democracy. Recent history has already shown us what effect the banning of books and denial of human experiences has on a society, and we are steadily headed in that direction.

This is all right out of the ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) playbook. If you don't know about ALEC, who funds them, and what their agenda is, you should. Dismantling public schools and higher education institutions is high on their priorities list. Getting the population who should be allied to split apart is key to maintaining their power.

Without education, there can be no understanding. That’s part of their goal.

Opinion DeSantis is wrong about Black studies-

The problem with these people is there is nothing too cruel, hateful, or obviously wrong as long as it reinforces their sense of group identity and righteousness.

Fascism is fine with them. In some ways, it's the purest expression of entitlement and hypocrisy, of unfettered white male rule. Its stupidity is a virtue as it spits in the face of those who disagree with them.

The shit-eating grin of someone who knows they're being stupid, hateful, and wrong and doesn't care because they can get away with it is part of the essence of fascism.

A few weeks ago @heidilifeldman wrote about the German Nazis coming to power:

“Today’s American Nazis are gaining the same kind of power the German Nazis did in the 1930s.”

And the #media parallels are also strong. The publisher of the Daily Mail in the 1930s was an explicit fascist, a member of a British fascist party. There is strong similarity to Murdoch and Wilks and Koch and Singer.

Political fascism hasn’t changed much—billionaires to dangerous lickspittles. notesfromcalicomanor.com/2023/
