Y'all remember, before the internet, when people thought the source of stupidity was lack of access to information? Yeah. It wasn't that.

There are some stretches of road that just go on forever. The motorway between Łódź and Częstochowa is like this.

You pass by the sign that says "Częstochowa 56km" and you drive and drive, have meaningful conversation with your partner until she nods away, the kid is watching half a season of Octonauts, and you listen through the discography of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

And then you pass the sign that says "Częstochowa 53km"

There is something wrong with the space-time continuum here.

This week I went over to Bluesky and asked people why they left Mastodon. Here's some remarkable responses I received:

"Yes I understand the Mastodon question but why do you also need to know my social security number?"

"This account is just to post hourly hedgehog pictures. I take this very seriously, and thus only answer hedgehog-related inquiries."

"Please stop claiming to be an investigative journalist for The New York Times. You clearly do not work for the New York Times."

I have really come to love Mastodon. So much so, I have followed everyone I found interesting, and everyone who has followed me.

Now I am following 7,500 people, and while I really enjoy that, Mastodon now prevents me from following anyone else.

I do not understand, why Mastodon would have such a rule. To me it seems very counterproductive to the whole concept of connecting with people from all over the world.

Back in Feb, when Grammarly said they were going to think about incorporating AI, I immediately canceled my account and uninstalled. And now they've actually done it.

I'm sharing because with everything going on, writers might not realize this is happening.

I hope that Mastodon folks who like to scold newcomers will realize how off-putting -- and damaging -- that behavior is.

Please be helpful, not scornful. Let's reduce the genuine risk of poisoning fediverse growth, and thereby giving social-media oligarchs indefinite control over online discourse.
