President Zelensky interviewed in Kyiv by Jerome Starkey from the Sun Newspaper

Russian special forces are planning to remove Ukraine’s leadership from power by the end of 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

In an interview with the British tabloid The Sun published late Monday, Zelensky claimed Russia would use “any means available to them,” including assassination, in the operation supposedly dubbed “Maidan 3.”

However, the war does not seem close to an end, and Zelensky said Ukraine and its supporters need to maintain unity as the war continues.

He said he thought China could do more to pressure Russia, since China is not interested in helping Moscow occupy Ukraine. He added that combined Chinese and U.S. pressure will be needed to prevent Russia from starting World War III.

“They don’t feel now that the world is totally against them.”
Russia is now taking new, unspecified steps in the Balkans, training new people, and planning to start new conflicts to destabilize Europe, he said to The Sun

The front as of the end of the day on November 22, 2023 - DeepState

▶️ Bilomoskovsky, Siversky and Bilhorodsky sections - no changes.

▶️ Svatove section - the enemy continues to exert pressure in the forest south of Lyman Pershyi, making progress. Near Synkivka, the Ukrainian Defense Forces prevented enemy attempts to improve the tactical position. Fighting continues in the area of Pershotravneve.

▶️ Bakhmut direction - Katsap continues to attack Klishchiyivka and Andriivka. They are making progress near the latter and are trying to cross the railroad near the village. It's not the first time that we've recorded an arrival at the Gagarin mine spoil heap, which is claimed to be ours. So far, there is no one in contact there, so the situation is being clarified.

▶️ Avdiivka section - the bastards are climbing to Stepove, according to a participant of those battles, there are 5 ruzzians per one of our infantrymen. Katsaps continue to climb the AKHZ, Promka and Vynohradnyky. They are making progress at the latter. The scale of the advances is being clarified, as there is footage of enemy groups entering the depths of the defensive lines, but it is not known whether they are consolidated or repelled. As usual, the Katsaps are trying to get near Opytne and Vodyane, but fortunately, they are not successful.

▶️ Berdiansk section - no changes.

▶️ Zaporizhzhia sector - no changes, fighting south of Robotyne continues.

▶️ Tavriya section - no changes.

Analytical note. The situation is very tense in almost all parts of the frontline. The enemy is using so many forces and means that sometimes there is no way to get into a defensive position - it's either to get down or to die. The Ukrainian soldier faces a difficult mission to survive the cold months. While some people rejoice at the first snow, others are complaining about the weather at the front. The enemy is concentrating its forces near Avdiivka, bringing in new or fresh units.

Over 5,000 female soldiers serve in war zone in Ukraine.

The number of women serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) has considerably increased since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

While in 2014, the total number of women in the AFU was 49,926, including 16,557 servicewomen, as of October 2023, the number of women in the Armed Forces increased to 62,062, including 43,479 servicewomen. This is 7.3% of the total number of Ukrainian forces, as reported by the Military Media Centre.

"We have the largest number of women on the battlefield in Ukraine in modern world history. They prove themselves not only as good military financiers or doctors but also as brave servicewomen faithfully defending their homeland," said Nataliia Kalmykova, Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister.

FRONTLINE UPDATE NOV 21-22

Winter has arrived. A lot of heavy rain followed by snow struck much of the frontline - especially the northern sector. Fighting has reduced significantly and some of the early video coming out shows military vehicles sunk in mud up to their door sills. It’s going to make the conditions in trenches truly awful.
According to the ISW the Russians have more equipment in the northern sector along with manpower than they do even in the Avdivka sector but are showing no signs of using it. They may even be attempting to carry out training in an effort to lift troop quality before next years offensives.
The attacks against the northern line of Klieshievka are continuing with VDV units being largely responsible. They continue to press Ukraine hard and make daily incremental gains.
As I said yesterday the Russians have regained the overall initiative, especially in the Bakhmut region. It now remains to be seen how desperately both sides want to take or hold territory and what resources they’re willing to use to do so.
Ukraine continues to take small amounts of territory in the Horlivka area and is now well east of the 2015 control line. There still appears to be no immediate objective here - why now and what are they aiming at?
Avdivka continues a slow deterioration in Ukraine positions. In the central and most easterly part of the salient the Russians have broken through defences in the industrial area and towards what was (as we would call it in the UK) a motorway services area. Snow and poor visibility have hampered operations, but it has to be acknowledged that Russia has been unusually coordinated in its air-ground operation and artillery in this area.
Further south, Marinka is now showing signs of a Ukrainian withdrawal. The Russians have pushed them out of 80% the town which lies NW-SE along reservoirs and a river. It’s been hotly contested for months with a back and forth front, but this time the Russian momentum has been stronger.
Kherson is causing the Russians a dilemma. They don’t have reserves in the area so they have to risk taking troops from other fronts - which they haven’t been allowed to do. As a result they’re limited by what they can do to oust the Ukrainians but seem united to try. The Ukrainians have expanded their holdings in the west of Krynky and along the coastline of the south bank, they have at least two crossing points and persist in getting supplies across. The terrain is hard for both sides but it’s easier to be in the defence role because the axis of possible attacks is so limited as the Russians have found. It’s why Ukraine chose the area in the first place. With the weather closing in both sides have to face a potential deadlock for several weeks until the freeze of winter hits hard? Just remember that while that’s traditional last year it really didn’t happen- climate change seems to have milder conditions and it’s mud more than snow.
The one thing we do know is the Russians are badly coordinated here. Morale is very low, commanders are indecisive and lack resources.
So overall Russia has the initiative except in the Kherson region, but the weather looks like it’s making itself felt which is why so much fighting died down in the last 48 hours. Visibility and movement have been hampered dramatically.
If the front slows and the weather cools it won’t be long before the missiles start flying at cities. What I wonder, will Ukraine use in retaliation? This year’s missile and drone campaigns won’t go unanswered I think.
