@aiannazzone @scerruti @martin @edutooters I think the nuanced nature of individual progress is an important point here. Not everyone develops a particular skill or disposition the same way at the same rate.
I think there is an important question on what counts as sufficient or adequate or acceptable progress and learning?
I also think about examples in programming where some measure success as lines of code in a given period of time, while largely or entirely ignoring the quality or efficiency of the code.
All of these are great reasons to move to #ungrading
@scerruti @aiannazzone @martin @edutooters i think it is very difficult, and often inequitable the way we assess both teachers and students. I have worn both teacher and administrator hats and will make a few points, focusing on students as an example. I recently spoke to a reporter about this as it related to grades and standardized test scores such as the NAEP. And I should say, it's easy to assess or evaluate, it is difficult or impossible to do so holistically or equitably.
1) Many factors outside of school have significant impact on student learning and well being. These include meeting basic needs such as food. There have been lots of studies that have shown how social supports for marginalized communities have closed achievement gaps. All to say, it's very hard to learn when you are hungry, which also extends to high levels of stress, trauma etc...
2) Many standardized tests (often overblown and single data points that should be considered with many others) are given at irregular intervals, in the US for example, the CCSS and NGSS focused tests, that are done in 5th, 8th, and 11th grades. That make it very difficult to attribute where learning did or did not take place.
3) Standardized tests are a very narrow measure, the whole "teaching to the test" is that the goal of education?
4) Student well being in a school is the product of many many factors controlled by everyone from the principal who implements district policy, works to set culture to counselors, nurses (if any), librarians, janitors, office staff, and teachers. All of these can support or harm student learning to various degrees.
There is a pervasive over-ascribing of responsibility for often 'failing' student performance to teachers which is persistent and highly problematic.
The Need for More Formative Research in Edtech
We studied products focused on social-emotional learning, parent engagement, elementary math, Spanish reading comprehension, and teacher and administrator efficiency and administrative tools.
The types of studies ranged from usability studies to correlational studies and more.

@aiannazzone @scerruti @martin @edutooters also important to note that in many of not all work situations one works as part of a team, it doesn't matter if it's in a restaurant, IT, teaching, HR, retail, etc... Individual accountability is often hard or impossible to ascribe because of complex contexts and interdependence on others.
@scerruti @martin @edutooters If students felt like school was about *actually learning* instead of competing for GPAs and limited slots at expensive colleges (and therefore scholarships), maybe they wouldn't stress out when it takes a little longer to grasp a concept.
It doesn't help that we need to set quarterly or semesterly deadlines for completing work.
Also important to note that in *most* lines of work, you're never graded. You just decide when the product is good enough and move on.
The group of people who are trying to divide the fediverse seem to have reached a new low.. They have a tool that lists how many instances block a particular instance, but it is highly manipulative.
For starters it is hand curated.. so they exclude blocks against their own instances and only includes instances they actually dislike.
Worse yet they curate a list ordered by "most blocked".. problem is they use the number of instances that block. They game the system by having large number of single-user instances. So instances in the top 50 may only be blocked by a few hundred people but still appear as if the blocks are significant....

Tried #ungrading this semester. Amazed by level of student work and by their honest and authentic assessments
I saw this post from @BlackAzizAnansi that Mastodon remains an overwhelmingly white space and I can't refute that, but I'm angry that it is this way. My experience in tech is that there's no shortage of black talent or black voices, there's a shortage of black opportunity and space due to racism. I see that reflected here. I feel like if we want a #blackmastodon then we can't be passive about this, we have to be intentionally inclusive, intentionally anti-racist. It's not enough to just support.

@mguhlin relatively Torrey Trust is fantastic and I wish she would come to Mastodon
@mguhlin @edutooter @edutooters 100% with this. I especially appreciate the point about assigning "Googleable" work. I think one of the things that Google searches to ChatGPT ask of us as educators is what student worthy tasks are. I have not worried about "cheating" in years because virtually all of the tasks we ask students to do involve analysis, revision, and solving complex challenges without simple or straight forward answers.
