Can we talk about all the ways #ChatGPT isn’t at all like a calculator?

I’ll start

You have to give a company a bunch of your data to use it

It randomly gives you wrong answers

The relationship with meaning is just different with words than it is with numbers

It is a half baked experiment on the public

What else 🤔

I think what worries me most about chatGPT is how easily and uncritically people accept the responses as true or accurate. I have seen "experts" identify inaccuracies, errors, bias, etc, but in most other cases people seem to accept with awe and wonder in what seems like a scene out of the Wizard of Oz, while accepting blindly what should not be acceptable.

Can we stop using the term "hallucinating" for #AI that gives false answers? Hallucinations are ungrounded perceptions based on disembodied sensation, which implies when an AI gives a correct answer it is grounding its perception in embodied sensation. But #ChatGPT can't sense anything. It just finds statistical correlations among conclusions made by beings with real bodies (us).

I got my teaching credential at National University in Southern California. I would have chosen a different program, but my college GPA was too low for most competitive programs. I saw this path as a penance for my poor grades. The program was ok at best, though I got to meet some great people there that led to my first teaching job.

I got my administrative credential at CSUDH, in a program specifically geared for Charter School Leadership. It was a transformative experience, and a highly focused one for the specific context and setting I was working at, an urban charter school. I can't speak highly enough of my experience both in coursework and in terms of the practical and communal experience there, with fantastic program leadership. I eventually returned to teach in the program and continue to collaborate with people there 10+ years after. It helped me become a better admin as well as a better university instructor. The current iteration of the program is linked below.

Forgive me for being facetious because of course we should not even HAVE academic integrity hearings, but how about at every hearing we simultanously put the *instructor* on trial and have them defend their assignment/assessment from charges that it pedagogically warranted cheating.

One of the best things I did this year is to turn off email notifications on my cell.

Thank you for making this point.
There is a very clear link between access to and violence from guns, lots of case studies within the US as well as other countries who have had tight gun controls for a long long time like Japan, and counties that shifted policies.
Sure exposure to violence on TV desensitizes us, but that is not a US unique thing. What is unique is the collective societal priority and value to have gun manufacturers make lots of money at the cost of lives.

Sure, the media is a factor in "violence".

A six year old shooting an adult? I daresay the prime factor is a six year old having access to a gun.

The standard playbook of doubt is to confound the issue by including other factors.
E.g. The tobacco lobby, who sponsored a swathe of studies arguing for other factors for cancer. This delayed sensible health policy by at least 20 years.

Ditto the fossil fuel lobby.

@crecente @publichealth @edutooters

That you would use a horrific current event to stat a conversation about a field you're familiar with is completely understandable.

But ultimately, by associating general considerations on cultural factors for violence to a particular gun-related event, you are unwittingly (I hope) running the exact doubt playbook that has done so much harm in other fields, and still precluded meaningful gun control in the U.S.

I just do not understand how "beta" self-driving features are allowed to be released on public highways and roads. There are so many other drivers on the road who have NOT opted into the beta test but who are forced to take part. This footage from the Tesla pile-up that happened on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco/Oakland the day that the "Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta" was launched is maddening: theintercept.com/2023/01/10/te
