Open Question Time:
If you were told you couldn't have a car anymore (presuming you have one already), what tangible guarantees would you need in order to be okay with that?
Widespread public transit?
Car-sharing programs?
Certain kinds of infrastructure?
Certain kinds of employment arrangements?
Tips for newbies: post visibility
- Visibility settings control where posts are shown. Recommended default: unlisted.
- Public: broadcast to all feeds.
- Unlisted: visible to everyone but broadcast only to followers. Good for long threads, replies, etc. Hashtags not searchable. Boostable to others’ followers.
- Followers: locked & visible to followers only. Not boostable.
- DMs: only visible to those tagged (& your admins). Don’t use someone’s handle in DMs if you don’t want them to see it!
@JeremyLittau Admins deciding what is "safe" for their users (which is very unsafe, by the way) is what creates silos. If a site's admins habitually defederate sites they don't like, then a silo is the result, by definition.
weirder.earth is an example of a Mastodon site that turned into a silo. They block so many peers, some of their users now can't connect to most of their friends.
This is why I believe blocking should be done at the user level only, with the help of opt-in blocklists.
Wieso?
@zorinlynx @jon I think reddits “algorithm” is a great one. I can switch between “New” & “Hot” at will. I wouldn’t hate a “hot” button on here that showed me the posts from my followers in the last hour that have gotten the most engagement first. Nothing is learning my preferences, just a bit of advanced sorting. It’d do 90% of what people like about an algorithm, but be led by the humans who use “New”, not a robot programmed to support the profit motive.
@toplesstopics Hi, just testing: does this message come trough?
It seems some admins are hating on the instance i am on, please say something if you can see this toot.
@datenzwerg Soso, ein "Lurker"? Ich folge dir jetzt, bin also ein "Observer" ;-)
Hast du Starcraft gespielt? Sonst macht der Flachwitz leider keinen Sinn für dich.
@freemo I took the most restrained way i could think of and only asked if quoto was removed and why.
Please note that i only bcc'd you so it does not look pushy. I personally think anything that looks like criticism quickly looks like an attack if sent to others too (work experience).
If anything that resembles a discussion happens, i will openly cc you.
@freemo Hi, did the email joinmastodon.org thing yield any results? How many emails were sent yet?
I am asking because i would email, but i don't want to flood them. I think flooding their inbox would be counterproductive.
So please let me know if we got a good turnout yet or not.
Comic linking / posting style:
Is it ok to copy the image of a comic into a post?
I wonder how exhausting it is for others to click through a link. I am using the browser interface and opening a link in a new tab is easy.
I would say with some decription, i would click through if it sounds interesting.
How many smartphone app users are there? Is it annoying to open a link or totally worth it to give the creators websites a site visit? Or would it be more in favour of creators to post the picture so people have easier access and more actually develop an interest? Needless to say, a link will always be included by me.
Are there any #contentcreator #author #authors that could help me get a better understanding?
Am i missing tags that i should add here?
Hooray, an actually intelligent robot to do our dirty work:

So what do people think about sharing links to comics? Is that a type of toot content that is well liked or rather perceived as annoying? Not asking about the specific comic, just sharing comic links in general.

Since there is no downvote here, a simple "no" will suffice to tell me it is not wanted.
In the browser, #mastodon displays three trending hashtags. Is there a way (without smartphone) to see more?
@freemo Concerning rate-limited problems, it seems it might have been partly my fault.
I use uMatrix, and had the log open when i saw (first picture) quite a lot of requests fly by while not actively using a mastodon tab.
So i closed some left over tabs (opened to maybe read later, that stuff), and the barrage subsided.
It seems the browser tabs all send lots of requests, even if inactive / in the background.
Since my development experience is strictly backend (if i see javascript or derivatives, i run) i have no idea how realistic it would be to get this under control. For the time being, i will be more watchful to close unneeded tabs and report back if the rate-limited problems subside. So far, i did not see another message.
I hate my life, and i hate yours too.
I hate to hate, and i hate that...

If i reply but did not favourite your toot: most likely i forgot. I get caught up in talking, i forget.
I generally invite questions. If you look for a clue if it is ok to ask hard questions: this is it. As long as it is in good faith and you want to know wtf i was thinking, go ahead please.
