Question:
"What does it mean when lava inflates? Is that just a process of aeration due to the lava moving move slowly and cooling down?"

twitter.com/snowshoedan/status

Answer:
"The surface and front of the flow starts to cool and lava continues to flow into the area - so it inflates. Imagine injecting cream into a flat donut (or haupia into a malasada)."

1 December 1942 | A transport of 532 Norwegian Jews deported from Bergen arrived at Auschwitz.

During the selection SS doctors sent 186 men to be registered in the camp. The remaining 346 people were murdered in a gas chamber.

Among them were Olga Wulff and her daughter Doris.

Are some of the characters in Andor animated? After watching a couple of Love Death +Robots, I'm seeing animation everywhere.

If you disagree with scientists about science, it’s not really a disagreement. You’re actually just incorrect. Science is not truth, it’s the process of finding the truth. When science evolves, it didn’t lie to you, it learned more.

Our partners at the Earth Observatory of Singapore Remote Sensing lab made map of surface displacements for Mauna Loa #MaunaLoa east side from JAXA ALOS-2 radar images acquired yesterday and earlier this year. This #InSAR displacement map shows motion of surface to east and up in this case. The northeast rift zone has expanded due to new magma moving there and the summit has moved down during #volcano #eruption at (29 Nov 2022, 10:23 UTC).

Our partners at the Earth Observatory of Singapore Remote Sensing lab has processed a map of Mauna Loa #MaunaLoa surface change from JAXA ALOS-2 radar images acquired yesterday and earlier this year. We call this a Damage Proxy Map, and in this case it shows the areas covered by new lava flows at (29 Nov 2022, 10:23 UTC).

Those of you who are following me may have noticed that I haven't been posting much - if you've noticed the new #eruption of #MaunaLoa, you've got a good idea why. I'm involved in the official response and not able to answer questions here, but if you have any, please feel free to direct them to "@USGSvolcanoes" on Facebook, Insta or Twitter, or directly to the askHVO@usgs.gov email account if it's about life and safety. Reminder: I will NOT be answering questions here!

Stay safe, y'all.

I don’t think he’s on Mastodon (yet), but it’s something that this community needs to know about as well: the latest @EuroGeosciences Angela Croome award for excellence in Earth, space, & planetary science journalism has gone to the BBC’s Jonathan Amos.

Many of us know him to be one of the finest science journalists in the world, so this is greatly deserved.

I’ve worked with him uncountable times & am proud to call him one of my best friends too.

Congratulations, sir 🙇‍♂️

A star made the rookie mistake of wandering too close to a black hole in a distant galaxy and got torn apart. This so-called tidal disruption event (TDE) was observed with many telescopes. ESO's VLT in Chile measured the distance and found it to be the furthest known TDE. It's also the first TDE to be discovered first in visible light rather than at higher energies like X-rays or gamma rays.
