Live "posting" coverage on Mastodon!!!

Do you look back with some nostalgia on live coverage of breaking stories like courtroom trials or political hearings on Twitter? These threads were very popular, providing a forum for real time community engagement.

Well, as demonstrated by Laffy's @GottaLaff live posting today (mastodon.social/@GottaLaff/111) of the Georgia severance motions for Chesebro and Powell, Mastodon now has the best live coverage of this type of breaking news anywhere.

The room-temperature superconductor that wasn’t: We have good explanations for why a chemical called LK-99 behaved the way it did. arstechnica.com/science/2023/0

I just called planned parent hood to thank them for not being active on twitter and encouraged them to delete their account

Your Twitter/X account is a microphone connected to a mixer controlled by a fascist. You can speak all you want. The fascist controls your volume and can mute you whenever he wants. And you might not even know you’ve been muted because you can still hear yourself in your headphones.

It’s not called resistance when your volume knob is in someone else’s hand.

@GrrlScientist I occasionally get called to do a little wildlife control. The raccoons in the city usually have something wrong with them. Plentiful garbage in the city means the population is greater than the number of places to make a den, so they are forced to be crammed tightly together in the available spaces, and this helps any diseases to spread. We had a distemper outbreak a couple of years ago, and that was not pretty.

@StillIRise1963 It was so blatant a way to drum up support for an unnecessary war. It was like aversion therapy to me. Luckily I've always been somebody with a lot of books.

@StillIRise1963 me too. I used to hate visiting my mom because we would just sit there and watch TV. The ads, the "news", the crappy shows. It would drive me crazy. It all sucks. I will never understand how people can watch that crap. I haven't had cable in 20 years. I got rid of it after they tried to force me to watch the Twin Towers falling over and over and over again.

It's impossible to distinguish between somebody who is a bigot because they are stupid, or somebody who is stupid because they are a bigot.

'If there's a more necessary countercultural message today than "lead a quiet life," "mind your own business," "uproot evil in the fields you know," and "live in hope," I don't know what it is.'

@stavvers I had it when I was young. The kind they used to call Petit Mal. I think they call it something else now. I haven't had one in over 30 years though, so it feels like it's gone. I'm not going to mortgage my house for an EEG to find out for sure though. It kept me from joining the military, which I'm still not sure if that was a good thing or bad thing.

'Despite English being the lingua franca of science, getting an excellent level of English is a privilege of few, restricted to high-income countries or those who can pay for intense language training in Global South countries. Yet, most of the hiring calls from Global North research institutes urging inclusion conflate being a good scientist with being good (or excellent) at English. This isn’t true'

It’s hard to believe that I’m from a generation that paid for ringtones when should this stupid glass rectangle make a single noise now, I’d smash it to bits.
