@dave yeah, he doesn't. forced conscription (aka very likely dead soon) is just evil.

Ukraine suspended conscription because they have more volunteers than they have capacity to train and effectively deploy. It’s just Russia that is doing forced conscription right now.

@dave it's irrelevant if they still do it or stopped it or that russia does it. the point is that the ukranian government has shown that it is willing to throw its citizens into the meat grinder by force. they can continue to do so at any moment.

Basically every country facing an existential threat conscripts its men, dude. Europe did it, we did it in WW2, etc.

We were facing an existential threat in WWII?
@Tyler @dave @bonifartius Our leaders were facing an existential threat to their bank accounts

@dave @Tyler you really have a warped definition of "existential threat" if a bombed harbor is already enough for that :)

So you think they were just going to leave us alone after they destroyed the pacific fleet?

@dave @bonifartius @Tyler The Japanese knew an invasion of mainland USA was impossible. At worst the Pacific Islands and the Philippine territories would have been threatened, not even any parts of the United *States* proper at that point in time.

@dave @Tyler no one will know, but that was not existential and warranting draft.

Maybe y’all shouldn’t have provoked them into it

Japan was the one expanding, and based on how WW2 went, and how Russia has been expanding these last ~20 years, appeasement is clearly not how you deal with imperialists.

No one was more expansionist than the yanks in the 19th and early 20th century. Who made them world police?

@Tyler @dave the wars in the middle east clearly were missions to defend peace in the west and to spread sweet enduring freedom, not to create puppet states which happen to have oil n stuff :)

@dave @Tyler @bonifartius >Dave "Philippines are rightful American Territory" Beedle

Dave “attacking someone’s military is generally seen as a declaration of war, actually” Beedle

@dave @Tyler @bonifartius I'm aware of that, but I don't think any US states were actually "threatened to the point of existence". But if you consider the territories of the time to be a part of the country's existence then that changes the picture somewhat.
@Tyler @dave @bonifartius America should have just spent the past 120 years sitting on its hands. For sure that would have been much better for Americans and the world at large. Lol like just do nothing fivehead, how hard is that?

@dave that's the "billons of flies eat shit, they can't possibly be wrong!" argument.

"country facing an existential threat", as if it's a living thing and not a completely bullshit construct.

We d8dnt face an existential threat in ww2. We were the existential threat.

@bonifartius @dave conscription is the fundamental reason for, and function of, the state. They will all be doing it before this gets better.

We only drafted like a quarter of our forces for vietnam because of volunteers
