well, if everybody starts to make life hell for gmail users, they will switch. it for sure worked the other way round, with gmail blocking everyone 💁

@ruud @selea

@selea@social.linux.pizza @gmail@social.linux.pizza @ruud@mastodon.world Yeah, I've worked at a registrar/email provider for a while, it's insane. But you can just host any kind of service, really, and you'll immediately notice that #gmail accounts are mostly spam, and reporting it to #Google does absolutely nothing. You'll be lucky getting a reply from their support at all.

The argument to keep allowing gmail is because so many normies are using it, but I'd argue that the more tech-savvy people should do their part and block it with explanation, so that they can understand why it's wrong to use gmail, at least in its current form.

Then again, there are plenty of reasons to dodge it, being the largest source of spam email addresses on the Internet is just one of them. Nobody seemed to care for any of the other reasons that were pointed out back in the day, I doubt the majority of people are going to care about this problem right now...

So, we have actually blocked new registrations for users that is using gmail.com.
This is because, 99% of all spam accounts uses gmail.com
80% gmail.com signups is spam.

@selea funny, i recently had a discussion about self hosting mail here on fedi. i made the point that gmail is a big spammer themselves. thanks for the additional data point ;)

Obviously, all the artists upset about losing jobs to AI generators should simply follow whatever advice they gave to the coal miners whose jobs disappeared.

i understand your intentions but i think it doesn't work. free software "replacements" for closed services will never be able to compete with those, but they shouldn't try to in the first place. they bring so many other features to the table which the closed counterparts never will be able to have, but some of these features outright frighten people. like that there is no higher instance to appeal to. it's learned helplessness and most people like it this way.

i don't see that catering to those who aren't caring will help any more than it has helped in the last decade: we got ubuntu etc. only for them to include things like amazon search. we had a good firefox, only to get it dumbed down and features nobody in the userbase asked for (like aquiring pocket) being added. meanwhile never publishing a non shitty sync server to self-host. redhat added so many bespoke parts for "desktop linux" shit, that almost every distribution is now the same as it is so hard to fight the systemd bullshit layer.

i really don't know why this watering down and compromising is so popular. the strength of free software is precisely that it isn't like the closed source parts and often completely different.

regarding committees, the "write an RFC and publish it" method has served well for decades now. the net is very good at self organizing, many now follow the lure of "doing things the way big tech does", but i think this will be the source of much pain in the future.

> come on, it's just not realistic. And even so, It's yet an extra level of admin which is simply not feasable for the "civilian". All of these solutions can work, but it pretty much involve making email admin becoming your main non-work activity

from my experience mail servers require less attention than many other things. the people who write and maintain things like postfix are _amazingly_ good at making stuff stable even across major version upgrades.

i also don't want that everyone completely self-hosts, but there are enough people around to host these things for other people. or small nice companies who host your mal for a few bucks a month. that people got to expect services to be "free" is a different topic. you can't save the world by regulation. e.g. buying "green" products from big supermarket chains doesn't help a bit compared to buying from a local ecological farmer. that might mean no more avocado toast, but that's the price to pay.

> what do mean? are you talking about mastodon.social? If yes, it could be, I'm new to the whole thing

yeah, it's kind of the gmail of the fediverse ;)
