Well, I don't recall verbatim what he said towards the end, but the essence was "helping others is more satisfying than anything else, including satisfying oneself"
That's the only thing I take issue with, and what you say evolutionary has a high probability of being true.
But perhaps there is more to it, incl "creativity" needed to evolve tools and methods, for which the tribe survives in the long run, but not necessarily benefit in the "now"

Being able to predict how thing are gonna be is always tricky it demands knowledge and trust within the group, that's notably why most solutions taken these days are short them, trust is almost nonexistant these day, for many valid and invalid reasons. and knowledge.... well the way education and patent/copyright were setup are a cause of the current unbalance.
